.MAY 13, 1955 QUAKER SPORTS SPORTS IN REVIEW As we go to press for the final time this year it is only proper that a short review of the year, in sports, be presented. The fall sports scene was high lighted by the activities of the football team. Although they onl\ managed to win one game they displayed a line defense and an eevn greater desire to win. The big moment of the season was their fine, hard fought, 14 to 7 victory over Lenoir Rhyne. Basketball was the next major varsity sport on the program, and from every standpoint the season was a very dismal one. The Quakers did manage to make the tournament, but they were knock ed out in the first round by Elon. The fine work of Bill Atkins will long be remembered, for most of us he made a dreary season seem a little brighter. He took second place in the conference scoring race after leading for most of the season. Baseball, which will have been completed by the time you receive this issue, enjoyed the greatest success of any of the major sports. The Quakers at times displayed superb ball, but at other times they proved to be no match against the opposition. Tennis and Golf enjoyed fairl> successful seasons, which was cer tainly appreciated by the Quaker partisans. It was not until the spring sports got underwaj that the fans had something to cheer about. A few track meets were held and the Quakers did right well; they proved to be most interesting. The Coaches, Stuart Maynard, Dave Meredith, and Ben Baker along with all the boys who took part in sports deserve a big vote ol gratitude. Their untiring ef forts are greatly appreciated. Intramurals Once again this year Yankee Stadium ruled the intramural sports scene. The final standings of the sections are not quite set as yet, but the Stadium appears to be a sure bet for the title. Archdale jumped off to a fast start by winning the tag football season, however they lacked ma terial in the other sports and they gradually were moved out of first place. The Stadium pulled ahead of New North during the basketball season and then proceeded to build up a slight lead in the point standings. The track meet, which the Stadium swept, undoubtablx will prove to be the winning mar gin. This will mark the fourth straight year that the Stadium has captured the intramural trophy. The battle for the individual trophy, which is given to the per son who compiles the most points in intramural play, is still un decided. Ray Chalkley and Coo Atlas have waged a torrid battle for the coveted trophy and only time will tell who is the victor. Till Next Year It has been a sincere pleasure for me to have been able to report sports doings to you during the past year. At this time I would like to wind up the year by wish ing all of you the most pleasant of summers. Good luck in all your exams, and I hope that we shall all meet again at Guilford next year. And to the graduating Sen iors, I wish lor you everything that you wish for yourselves, may good fortune always follow you.
