This is a pertinent ques tion in the minds of several stu dents and certainly a question that needs serious consideration by Guilford supporters This year the college has an en rollment of over six hundred stu dents - - more than ever before in its history - - and, from reports, seems to be headed in the same direction next year. As a result of this increase ill registration, nu merous problems have arisen on campus. First, quite a number of the men students cannot live in the dormi tories because of the lack of rooms; several of them either live in the homes in the community or else must day-hop, though they would like to live on campus. At the beginning of the school year a few boys had to make their home in the gym until they could find room elsewhere. Signs of the increased enroll ment may be found in the many large classes - - especially of re quired subjects as Biology 12, Phi losophy 24, etc. classes whose number far surpasses the 150 mark. The classrooms for some of these subjects are either not large enough or else do not have suffi cient seats. These large classes are not fair to the students or profes sors. Guilford is represented as a (Continued on Page 4) vated to provide classrooms, faculty and administrative of fices. E—Plans for additional faculty rental housing will be consid ered. F—Discussion of plans and costs for other essential improve ments in the central heating plant and Founders Hall. LI— A Campus Plan is essential for SENIOR SPOTLIGHT PEGGY WELLS Peggy Wells, a blonde southern belle, hails from Wallace, North Carolina, and from Mary Hobbs Hall. She grew up on a farm in the eastern part of the state. At the annual Christmas dance during her freshman year, Peggy was chosen the Monogram Christ mas queen Her activities center ed around the F. T. A. and the Guilfordian her first three years here. This year, as house presi dent of Hobbs Hall, she has served on the WSG Council. She was also elected to the May Court. Through out college, she has been employed in the Registrar's office here on the campus and has proved very dependable in this capacity. She has proved a helpful friend to "her" girls in Hobbs, and in her soft-spoken manner, she has been a decided influence on many. After doing her practice teach ing first semester, she plans to ward a career as an elementary school teacher (with maybe a lit tle housekeeping on the side). Peggy, the girls at Hobbs and your many other friends can never forget you and your contribution to Guilford. Good luck! promotional purposes as well as for planning and placing all future buildings and for all campus development - - roads, walks, planting, etc. There is now available in the library, for those students who are interested, a beautiful two color brochure containing the floor plans and other additional infor mation concerning the new build ing in town. FEBRUARY 24, 1956 JERRY PAYSEUR This week our Senior Spotlight shines on a history and social sci ence major from Lincolnton, North Carolina. Jerry Payseur has spent all four of his years at Guilford being outstanding in intramurals and the choir. He began his freshman year by being on the honor roll for one semester, plus participating in such intramural sports as tag football, volleyball, and Softball. Singing was his big activity in his sophomore year. He joined the choir and the New North Chora liers. As for intramurals, he play ed tag football, volleyball, basket bal, and softball. He was even on the baseball squad and played in several games. In his junior year Jerry once again participated in intramurals, the choir, and New North Chora liers. Added activities wen> Bap tist Student Union, Future Teach ers of America, and stage manager of the choir. Honors went to him for winning horseshoe doubles, and his team, New North, won the volleyball championship. He was also on the All-Campus volleyball team. This year, due to his outstand ing reliability, Jerry held offices in several activities. He is business manager of the choir, publicity chairman of the Baptist Student Union, treasurer of the Future Teachers, and treasurer of the History Club. Furthermore, be cause of his fine singing ability, he is one of the members of the Guilford College Quartet. Next year Jerry plans to teach somewhere in the Guilford College area. His real ambition is to go to law school some day. We know that whatever he does he will do it with the best of his ability.
