A moustache growing contest will be sponsored by The Guilfordian from September 20 to Homecom ing Day. All male students are eligible (sorry girls) and are urged to participate. First prize will be a moustache cup. Pictures of likely contestants will be run in The Guilfordian until our winner is announced. On Homecoming Day all students except Ihe winner will be requested to shave off their moustaches. The moustache cup will then be presented to Mr. Moustache at the Homecoming Dance where he will be the only student present decorated by both moustache cup and moustache. The award will be presented on Ihe basis of • ize, uniqueness, ap pearance and quality. The Guil fordian staff will select the win ner. Staff members will of course, GUILFORD COLLEGE, FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1956 be excluded from competition. Moustache wax will be available in the Student Union ouilding. Any profit made by the sale of the wax 'will be used toward Ihe purchase of the prize. It is the hope of The Guilfordian that the success of the contest will be such thai it will inaugurate an annual contest. Here is an op portunity for the student body to get behind the kind of contest that puts punch into the school year. Think of the glory in having a moustache longer than your room mates, and better yet, your class mates. It will be a simple matter to recognize a friend while in Greensboro. The time, saved just by having so much less to shave will be enough to kiss your girl good-night so many more times. Let's all get behind a moustache and give the contest our whole hearted support, Graduate Study For Science Majors Entering the field of physics and its branches this year is >ne of the largest classes that Dr. E. Garness Purclom has seen gradu ate in the past years. Most of the majors are planning their future in the research phase of physics, in line with the emphasis that our country has placed for research men and technicians in this field. Charles Strider, senior class president, has received a study and work scholarship to the Hughes Aircraft Corporation Graduate Program. The Univer sity of North Carolina has award ed an honoi's graduate fellowship to Larry Bumgarner, Lockesd Aircraft Corporation in Nan Nuys, California has accepted Leo Rogen in the capacity of a research physicist. Gene Sparrow heads for Pennsylvania State University where he will assist in the depart ment of physics. Andy Connor (Continued on Page 6) First Western Electric Scholorship Awarded The Western Electric Company has recently announced that Fred Elmo Thompson, a sophomore at Guilford College, has received one of the company's scholarships be ing given through Western Elec tee's newly established Scholar ship Program. The program consists of one hundred and twenty five scholar ships to be offered during 1956 for the 1956-57 academic year. The program provides for approxi mately one hundred scholarships for engineering students and twenty-five for science, business administration and liberal arts students. Each scholarship will pay up to SBOO a year to cover the cost of tuition, fees and books.
