Guilfordian Staff Meeting
Is Set For Mon
On Monday night, September 15, at 7:00, the first GUILFORDIAN meet
ing of the year will be held in the Quaker-Guilfordian office at the
Student Union to organize a staff for the year.
Anyone interested in journalism or creative writing is welcome to at
tend. Reporters interested in news, sports, and feature writing are very
Recreation Area
Ready For Use
Freshmen—be pleased, for you
have come to Guilford just after it
has added a new area to its recre
ational facilities.
An additional recreation area,
just completed this summer, has
been built adjacent to the tennis
courts. It is lighted and its smooth
finished concrete is expected to ac
commodate baskektball, volleyball,
or badminton games. Lines for
shuffleboard have also been mark
ed off. According to Mr. Morrah,
director of public relations here at
the college, the area will probably
be used to a large extent for out
side games and dancing.
The majority of recreational
events planned for this week will
take place there. Until this year
there has been no area for such
outside activities.
College Reception
Will Be In Gym
Friday Evening
The annual college reception for
all new students will be held in the
gymnasium Friday night at 7:30.
Included in the receiving line will
be all faculty members and mem
bers of the social committee.
At the reception there will be
music for dancing until approxi
mately 10:00 p.m. A band is to be
obtained by the social committee.
Girls will be accompanied by
their "big sisters." This affair is not
formal. Cocktail dresses for the
girls and suits and ties for the boys
will be acceptable.
This is the first school sponsored
event of the year.

personnel, and headliners. Guest
editorials and "Letters to the Edi
tor" will always be accepted.
This first meeting will be for the
purpose of selecting staff members
and assigning news beats. The edi
torial staff will be introduced to the
new members and a brief expla
nation of GUILFORDIAN operations
will be given.
Previous journalistic work is not
a requisite for staff membership.
Anyone interested in any phase of
newspaper writing should attend
this meeting.
The home game with Elon
Friday night will be played in
the Greensboro High School
Stadium at 8:00. Transportation
to and from the game will be
available. More definite plans
concerning this will be an
nounced later.

Frosh Orientation Week Plans Involve
Schedule Filled With Various Activities
With the registration of 183 freshmen, Orientation Week has begun with a full calendar of events lasting
today through Thursday. During the summer months plans for this week have been developing under the
student leadership of Graham Allen and Carol Mcßane, presidents of the MSG and WSG respectively.
A new approach to freshman orientation is student leaders. Each new student has been assigned to one
of these leaders, whose job it is to acquaint the members of his group with life at Guilford. They will accom-

Magazine Young Writer's
Contest Closes October 1
In the last issue of the '57-58 GUILFORDIAN an article was printed
which maij interest several incoming students. That article is reprinted
here.
The magazine, The New Republic, is extending an invitation
for young writers, members of both
the student body and the faculty,
to submit essays in its present
"Competition for Young Writers."
One thousand dollars in awards
for the best essays on the state of
American fiction considered in
general terms or in terms of a
single younger novelist, and for the
best essays on any aspect of pres
ent-day television viewed as a
medium for enlightenment or en
tertainment will be given.
The awards will be distributed
as ten awards of one hundred dol
lars each—five in each category.
Any writer under twenty-seven
years of age is eligible for com
petition. Essays should be fifteen
hundred to three thousand words
in length. The manuscripts will be
judged by the editors of The Neiv
Republic, and should be submitted
by October 1, 1958 to: Awards

functions. Also, they will be on
hand to answer questions and to
guide new students over the cam
pus.
For the first few days of Orien
tation Week all meals will be
served at Founders. Mary Hobbs
girls will not set up their work
schedules until the upperclassmen
arrive.
Most convocations and tests will
take place in the auditorium of
Memorial Hall. This is the build
ing overlooking the circle. A com
plete schedule of events can be
found in the booklet entitled "The
First 9 Days.'
During the free time when no
thing is scheduled on the program,
students can find several recrea
tional areas. These include the
lake, tennis courts, ball fields, and
new recreation area. The Student
Union and several of the dorms
boast the ownership of a Tele
vision set.
Open House Set For
8:30 p.m. Tuesday
On Tuesday evening at 8:30 p.m.
members of the New Garden
Friends Meeting will honor the
freshmen with an Open House held
in the basement of the meeting
house.
All freshmen will be accom
panied by their student leaders.
Various members of the meeting
will be there to welcome the
guests.
Temporary Leaders
To Be Chosen Soon
Wednesday evening at 3:30 a
campaign will begin for the elec
tion of temporary class leaders.
These leaders include a class chair
man, song leader, cheerleader,
project chairman, and a committee
of five.
The chairman's job will be to or
ganize the class. All singing in
freshman chapel will be the re
sponsibility of the song leader, and
the cheerleader will have the job
of teaching the college cheers to
the class and of building up inter
est for each ball game.
These temporary leaders will
serve until the members of the
class know each other well enough
to make a wise selection of class
officers. They will include a presi
dent, vice-president, secretary,
treasurer and committee. An elec
tion for the officers will take place
either the last of October or first
of November.
Voting for freshmen leaders will
be between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday evening and the win
ners will be announced that night.
