FEBRUARY 6, 1959
A quick check of the calendar shows that it is still winter. Yet when
queried about what those padded gladiators were doing.on the flat area
across from English, the answer was they were in the midst of something
called Spring Football Practice. This is something the Red and Gray of
Guilford has been doing since this past Monday, will continue until a
20-day period has gone by. During this period of time the Quakers of the
gridiron world will work on filling gaps left by graduated players, with
the practice being highlighted by a scrimmage with nearby Elon, along
with scrimmages within the squad.
THINGS ARE LOOKING BRIGHT
From this angle things are looking good for the Quakers as they
make preparations for the upcoming 1959 grid campaign. Only four
seniors were on the 1958 squad—a center, a guard, and two tackles.
Coach Herb Appenzeller, along with his staff, must look for replace
ments. The biggest gap is left at the center position. With Daryl Allen
the Quakers were well fortified at this position. Now he is gone, and
a replacement is being sought. The top reserves at this position this past
season were Gwynne Hupfer and Dale Johnson. These boys must now
move up to fill the gap. The gap left by Larry Chesson at the guard slot
is well taken care of. Larry Younts and Fred Barringer can capably take
up the slack there. The tackles are well-manned by Wayne Henley, Sam
Cutler, Walter Wiggins, and others, and the loss of Bill Jones and Ches
ter Haworth will not hurt the squad a lot, although they will be missed.
A new fullback might be in the starting backfield, at least this spring.
Lester Parker is having trouble with his shoulder and might not be able
to participate in spring practice. These are the main trouble spots for the
Quakers, and much can be done this spring to alleviate these problems.
JUNIOR COLLEGE HELP?
There might be added help coming from another junior college in the
state other than Chowan. Almost due south of Guilford rests Wingate
Junior College, and from there might come boys that will bolster the
Quaker gridders. Four or five "seniors" at the college are expected to
arrive on the campus tomorrow, and it is certainly hoped that they will
stay on at Guilford for their remaining two years of college. In the two
years these boys have been at WJC the record has been 9-1 in 1957 and
7-1 in 1958, plus a bowl game. The most highly regarded players from
this squad that will make the trip are Sonny Basinger, Richard Money,
Danny Kirk, and Bob Gregson, and perhaps a couple other of equal
talent. In his freshman year at WJC Basinger was named to the junior
college All-American team. Sonny is a 165-pound streak of lightning,
and is a hard back to bring down. Both Money and Kirk are centers,
and both tip the scales at over 200 pounds. Money is a 218-pounder and
Kirk weighs in at 210. Gregson is one of the top guards at Wingate. A
linebacker solely his first year at WJC, Gregson played with the first
eleven this year, and is a rugged individual. And any others that might
come up from Wingate are equally as talented. Come on up and stay,
fellows, the college is fine, and the people are finer. And the chances
are great that you'll see a lot of action if you stay.
OTHER SPORTS ON THE WAY
And don't forget the other sports that come to the Guilford campus.
Within a few weeks, probably by the first of March, baseball, track,
tennis, and golf will start practice. There will be rebuilding in baseball,
tennis, and golf, with track the only sport left in good shape, compara
tively, by graduation. It can be hazardous, though, with all these sports
going on at the same time. A baseball player might have a javelin jabbed
through him while a track start might have baseballs bounced off his
head. But regardless of the hazards, these sports are on the way to finish
out the sports scene for Guilford during the year of 1958-59.

DON LINEBERRY TOP FROSH
FOR QUAKER CAGE SQUAD
Before Christmas it was the for
ward position. After Christmas it
has been the guard slot. But what
ever the position the job is done,
and is done well. For the outstand
ing work Don Lineberry has done
for the Quakers this year he is
named the MSG Athlete of the
Week No. 24.
Lineberry is a freshman from
nearby Asheboro where he' made
the all-star team in the northern
group of the Piedmont Conference.
Standing at 6-foot-l Don's main
offensive weapon is a good jump
shot, although he will drive if
there is a slight opening.
When the season opened Line
berry was in the starting line-up,
and has been there ever since. As
to where he played on the starting
five was determined by Bob Young.

jured knee Lineberry was placed at
the forward position. When Young
was able to return to action Don
returned to the guard position, a
position more familiar to the
youngster. There is where he has
been ever since Christmas, and
only on occassion has he returned
to the court as a forward.
With his jump shot and driving
lay-ups Don has averaged 12.2
points a game in the first 13 played,
excluding the tournament at Spin
dale. In racking up that average
Lineberry has fired in 50 field goals
and 58 charity tosses for a total of
158 points. The best night Don has
had so far was when he swished in
19 markers against the Panthers in
High Point. A little more accuracy
at the 15-foot mark, notably the
foul line, could have put him in the
20's. That is the only place that he
has had any trouble. Lineberry has
connected on 69 per cent of 84
charity tosses attempted, a per
centage slightly below regular col
lege standards. However, from the
floor it is another thing. Don has
banged in field goals at a clip of
40 or better per cent throughout
the year.
In the defensive department
Lineberry is doing an equally good
job. And he has been a mainstay
under the boards for the Quakers
all year, and always gets his share
of rebounds.
With a year of valuable experi
ence of college basketball under his
belt Lineberry will be able to get
more out of the skill he already has.
Only a freshman and he is already
among the top scorers in the North
State. For sure, Don Lineberry is
worthy of being this issue's AOW.
