Mildred Marlette
Returns as Dean
Miss Mildred Marlette has re
turned to Guilford as Dean of
Women. She recently attended the
University of North Carolina
where she has been completing her
work for her Ph.D. in English.
For eight years Miss Marlette
served previously in the position
that she now holds. She left Guil
ford in the spring of 1956 and re
turned to resume her job this fall.
Speaking of the duties of the Dean
of Women, Miss Marlette said, "Al
though I realize the problems and
long hours involved in this work, I
consider it a challenge and a pleas
ure to work with the students and
faculty at Guilford College."
Although she was gone, she ad
mitted that she felt Guilford was
"really home," and that her work
was here.
Mrs. Milner to Head
Altrusa Club
This past summer at the conven
tion of Altrusa International, Mrs.
Ernestine C. Milner, professor of
psychology at Guilford College,
was chosen president-elect of the
organization. This position will be
in effect for a two-year term, after
which Mrs. Milner will become
president of the international club.
Mrs. Milner has previously been
president of the local chapter of
the organization, chairman of vari
ous committees, and governor of
the district organization. She has
also served as vocational informa
tion chairman of the club. Prior to
becoming president-elect, she held
the offices of second vice-president
and then of first vice-president.
As president-elect, Mrs. Milner
will serve as program co-ordinator.
She will serve as international rep
resentative of Altrusa and will rep
resent the club at district conven
tions. The first of these conventions
will be held in Natchez, Mississippi,
on October 16, 17, and 18. In April
of the coming year, she will attend
the district conventions in Atlantic

Six New Faculty Members Are
Added To Guilford Departments
Among the new faculty members are (left to right) Mr. Henry Clary, Miss
Joyce Perry, Mrs. Bartlett Paul and Mr. Paul Zopf. Absent are Mrs. Gerald
Vance and Miss Gwen Reddick.
Yates is Named
Head Registrar
Mr. Bill L. Yates has been ap
pointed acting registrar of the col
lege and Mrs. Lucille N. Thomp
son has been named assistant regis
trar. These two are taking over the
duties of the position Miss N. Era
Lasley held for 36 years.
Work in the registrar's office is
being divided up so that Mr. Yates
will carry on most of the corres
pondence and work with the public
while Mrs. Thompson will keep die
permanent records, check sheets on
seniors and other paper work.
This turnover in the administra
tion brought about the new system
of registration this fall in which
the student himself did most of the
work. "Mrs. Thompson deserves
credit for changes in the set-up,"
said Mr. Yates. "She labored over
it day and night all summer."
According to Mr. Yates the office
is making a decided effort to con
tinue improving the organization
of its proceedings.
Miss Lasley, former registrar, is
working with the Alumni Office as
Special Alumni Assistant. She is
trying to complete an accurate
alumni directory which is expected
to be finished by 1962 in time for
Guilford's celebration of its 125 th
year of continuous service. Miss
Lasley officially retired as registrar
last year and is now working on a
part-time basis.
Dr. Kent is New
Dean of Men
Dr. E. Daryl Kent has accepted
the position of the Dean of Men
and the Dean of Students for the
coming academic year. The posi
tion was left open when Bill Yates,
the former Dean, moved to the po
sition of Registrar of the College.
Dr. Kent's responsibilities will in
clude both the management of the
men students as well as the per
formance of various other duties
in connection with the office.
This office is not new to Dr. Kent.
He held the Dean's position from
1947-1957. His office is located in
the College Union.

GUILFORD COLLEGE, N. C., OCTOBER 9, 1959
Recreation Program
Planned
Probably one of the best addi
tions to Guilford College this past
year is the newly appointed Recre
ation Committee, consisting of
seven faculty members and twelve
students. Not to be confused with
the Social Committee, the chief
aims of this group are to promote
more varied activities on the cam
pus and to provide something to
do for the students on week-ends.
The first big leap by the com
mittee was to make plans for keep
ing the College Union open on Sat
urday and Sunday afternoons and
nights. No doubt this will be wel
come, especially to those who don't
go home or who cannot afford to
go off campus every week-end.
The use of Shore's basement for
all the girls is to go into effect, and
it is hoped that all those who would
like to get into a bridge game or
play ping pong will take advantage
of the opportunity. This will help
the girls from different dorms be
come acquainted as well as give
them a place to relax.
Perhaps you have noticed the
recreation programs after supper
have been regularly frequent. This
is another step of. the committee
and they plan to keep the schedule
two nights a week; moving into the
gym and inside activities during
the winter.
The most unusual of the projects
is the promotion of co-educational
competitive tournaments. These are
planned in badminton, ping pong,
volley ball, bridge, and shuffle
board, so grab a partner and sign
up when they are announced.
This committee was formed in
the interest of the students and it
is hoped that they will take advan
tage of these new opportunities
and that the school spirit will be
revived and increased by these
measures.
The Recreation's Committee con
sists of: Coach Appenzeller, Coach
Maynard, Miss Reddick, Miss
Perry, Miss Upchurch, Miss Mar
lett, Charlie Hendricks, Kaye Bur
ton, Margaret Haworth, Juli Trim
ble, Sue Drake, Jan Cornell, Lynn
Hundley, Betty Lou McFarland,
Groome Fulton, Ed Bannigan,
Frank Bailey, Jim Boles and Tom
O'Briant.
Guilford welcomed six new members to the faculty and staff this
fall. They represent additions in the fields of psychology, sociology,
science, physical education, and recreation, and bring with them years
of both training and experience.

Henry E. Clary is the new Director of the College Union. Mr. Clary

in Greensboro, N. C. for a number of years at Cone Y.M.C.A., on the
Juvenile Court, and at the Central Y.M.C.A. He has also been active
in civic organizations in Greensboro.
GERALD W. VANCE
Gerald W. Vance has accepted the position of Assistant Professor
of Psychology. Mr. Vance was awarded an A.B. degree at Wesleyan
University. He received his S.T.B. at Boston University and his Master's
degree at the University of Connecticut. Mr. Vance has had experience
as a minister and teacher. He taught previously at Frazeysburg, Ohio
High School, Worcester Junior College, and Oakwood School in
Poughkeepsie, N. Y.

versity of Leeds, where she also received her Master of Science degree.
After coming to the U. S., she did medical research and social service.

for the past two years has been visiting lecturer in geography at Queens
College in Charlotte. She has been very active in civic and cultural or
ganizations, she and Mr. Bartlett being charter members of the Guild
of Charlotte Artists.

Paul E. Zopf, Jr. is the Assistant Professor of Sociology. Mr. Zopf
was born in Bridgewater, Conn., and was educated at the University
of Connecticut and the University of Florida, where he later was a
faculty member. Mr. Zopf holds a Bachelor and Master's degree and has
completed the major portion of his work on the Doctorate.

1958-59 A Cappella Choir
Choir Has R
The Guilford College A Cappella
Choir announced at its first meet
ing of the year the sale of a new
record. The record was made in
May and the first copies have ar
rived. The record is a 33 1/3 RPM
recording on the RCA Victor label.
The members have set aside the
week of October 11-17 as "Choir
Record Week." Many promotional
activities are planned including
canvassing the Guilford and
Greensboro area. The choir asks
that all students join in helping
Eromote the record, for it is an
onor for both the choir and our
college to be able to make such a
record.
The record is not made for
profit, but with the idea of intro
ducing better music into our so
ciety. The profits are returned to a

fund which will make it possible
for future choirs to make similar
recordings. The original record
which was made in 1956 was com
pletely financed by the choir mem
bers. The profits from the first rec
ord were used to finance the new
record with the money given by
last year's choir members.
The music on the record includes
a variety of secular and spiritual
music. All of the numbers are done
without accompaniment and the
members sing from memory. Much
credit must be given the choir for
the time spent learning the music
and the many hours of practice re
quired to achieve the standards for
such a recording by such a well
known record company. Special
credit is due to the directors, Mr.
