Guilford Diamond
Team On Way To
Successful Season
: Through the first six games of
baseball Guilford has played this
season, the Quakers possess a rec
ord of four wins and two losses. In
North State action the slate reads
two wins and one loss.
Here is a brief review of the
games played against Lenoir-
Rhyne, the University of Maine
and Elon. Not included are games
after April 16. (The ACC game
scheduled for April 13 was rained
out).
Quakers 9; Bears 5
Guilford's strong-armed right
hander, Larry Gill, started his third
game of the season against the
Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, and sent them
away from Greensboro with a 9-5
loss.
With the exception of a three
run outburst in the fifth inning,
Gill was in complete charge. Big
Red rifled the third strike past 11
Bears, including eight in the first
three innings, and walked five. He
surrendered six hits.
The Quaker bats backed Gill up
with 10 hits. Brodie Baker led the
attack with a homer and a triple.
Bob O'Daniel drilled two doubles.
Conrad Parker collected a triple
The Quaker baseballers con
tinued to roll by taking two
non-conference games from
Norfolk's William and Mary
10-9 and 5-4 in an away double
header April 17.
Little, relieving Gill in the)
7th inning, was credited with
the first win; while Herring
pitched a 4-hit effort and Aber
nathy homered to rack up the
second game.
The tennis and golf teams ran
into trouble, however, losing
4-3 and 5-2, respectively.
Guilford now leads the North
State Conference with its 2-1
record, and boasts a 6-2 season
standing.
and a single. And Lee Johnson
rapped out a pair of singles. Bobby
Hodges had a double.
Quakers 11; Maine 4
The offensive punch of the Quak
ers came to life in the latter inn
ings to deal the touring University
of Maine an 11-4 defeat.
Mickey Herrin picked up the win
for Guilford, pitching in relief of
Charlie Little. Wayne Wyckoff and
Brodie Baker also saw action on
the mound.
Conrad Parker was the big man
at the plate for Guilford with four
one-base blows. Brodie Baker con
tinued his lusty hitting with a triple
and a single.
Quakers 7; Christians 6
Elwood Parker snapped out of a
slump to deliver a bases-loaded
triple in the eighth inning to pull
the Quakers from behind, and pre
sent them with a 7-6 win over the
Elon Fightin' (and they did just
that) Christians.
A fight that broke out in the
ninth inning marred the win for
Guilford. The pugilistic exhibition
—something which should have
never happened—originated be
tween Jack Holley and four Elon
players that had been ejected from
the contest. Before cooler heads
finally were able to restore order,
mob action developed.
In the featured event of the af
ternoon—the game—Larry Gill
started, and pitched the first seven
and two-thirds frames. A four-run
rally by Elon chased him from the
mound.
Charlie Little came on in relief,
and was given credit for the win.
Besides his triple, Elwood Parker
also had a single. Jim Stutts crack
ed out two singles that drove in
three runs. Conrad Parker boomed
out a double.
