Guilford's May Day celebrations
got off to a cold and early start last
Saturday morning with the Fresh
man Diaper Parade. Following this
event, the men's dorms presented
their skits, satirizing just about
everything on the campus from the
Slater System to the proposed
three-chapel week.
The faculty judges—Dean Kent,
Dr. Burrows, Dr. Newlin, and Mr.
Lockard—awarded first prize to
Center Section for their presenta
tion of "A Takeoff on a Takeoff."
Dave Seidler and Howard Krakow
wrote the script, showing what
might have happened if the first
American astronaut had been
launched into space from Guilford
College. Dr. Milner, Dr. Victorius,
Dr. Purdom, Dr. Polhemus, Mrs.
Bartlett, and Mrs. Milner were
satirized in fine style by the Center
Section men.
Came The Afternoon . . .
Saturday afternoon, attention
swung to women's May Day. A
colorful presentation of the Cin
derella story highlighted the after
noon. The scenery, a new addition
to Guilford's May Day, provided a
background of castles and the
wonders of fantasy-land. The story
swiftly unfolded through lively
dances and skits with colorful and
original costumes contributing to
the overall effect.
More than 1,200 people filled the
bleachers, and laughter prevailed
as the barnyard animals frolicked
around Cinderella. The cast in
cluded Judy Loflin as Cinderella;
Ann Shelton as the stepmother;
and Brenda Alexander and Carol
Lowe as the stepsisters.
The May-pole dance concluded
the celebration.
That Night . . .
Saturday night the scene shifted
to the college gym and the annual
May Day dance, sponsored by the
Women's Athletic Association.
The highlight of the evening was
the presentation of the 1960-61
May Court and their escorts, in
cluding: May Queen Miriam Al
maguer and Fernando Leiva; Maid
of Honor Jane Allen and Maurice
Raiford; Joyce Campbell and
Charles Campbell; June Carroll
and Ed Carroll; Sue Drake and
Frank Smith; Margaret Haworth
and Rawley Young; Angie Kopley
and Tommy Waters; Betty Lou
McFarland and Alan Atwell; Lil
lian O'Briant and Tom O'Briant;
Dora Smith and Charles Snow.
Music was furnished by Johnny
Shields and the Mellotones.
