Friday, November 22, 1968 Tf) Quilfor&an SPORTS View From The Crowd By TED MALICK 1967-68 It was some kind of year for Guilford College basketball! The Quakers under Coach Jerry Steele enjoyed their best winning percentage ever, .833, with 25 wins to only 5 defeats. The wins failed by two to top the school record set the previous season. Guilford's achievements last season included a top ten ranking in the Associated Press Poll, a Gate City Classic championship, the Carolinas Conference regular season and tournament titles, an unprecedented third consecutive NAIA District 26 crown, and number one seeding the National Finals at Kansas City. The Quakers set the tone for the season in their opening as they smashed UNC-Charlotte 125-51 establishing numerous school records in the process. Led by the talented All-American trio of Bob Kuaffman, Ed Fellers, and Pat Moriarty, the Quakes won eight straight games before bowing to St. Michael's (Vt.) 92-79 in the AIC Holiday Tourney semi-finals at Springfield, Mass. Guilford defeated Northeastern in the opening round and host American International for third place honors. Both AIC and Northeastern went on to enter NCAA post-season playoffs. Guilford returned to conference action for six more victories including road wins at Appalachian and Catawba before falling to Atlantic Christian at Wilson. The worst slump of the season came in late February as the Steeleman lost two out of three to Lenoir-Rhyneand Elon, both away from home. But the Quakers regrouped and swept through the Conference tournament in Winston-Salem by whipping Lenoir-Rhyne and Appalachian, and by edging Catawba in the championship game 80-73 despite losing Kauffman, Moriarty and Bo Whitaker early in the second half on personal fouls. Tourney MVP Fellers teamed with Bob Bregard and subs John Brooks, Rod Gaylord, and John Dixon to win the title for the first time in the school's history. Then came the District 26 crown byway of wins over Greensboro College and Pembroke State, and the jet trip to Kansas City. The top-seeded Quakers were upset in the opening round by Oshkosh State of Wisconsin 80-78, the tourney's eventual third-place finisher. Another season such as this is not in the immediate for the Quakers. But Guilford College is on the basketball map and Kansas City does not seem so distant any longer. * * * Pick the winners: With no issue next week due to Thanksgiving holiday let's make it a holiday treat by forecasting right up through Nov. 30. With arch-rivalries, conference crowns, and bowl bids at stake, let's try these with the overall record now at 123-54-2: Nov. 23: 1. Guilford at Appalachian—the Quakes want this more than the Apps. The Apps lost playoff chance after loss to E&H. Guilford in "the upset of the week." 2. Western Carolina at Presbyterian—too close to call, but a slight edge on defense to the home team. 3. Vanderbilt at Davidson—And to think, Guilford is on Davidson's schedule next season. Vandy by 4-5 TD's. 4. Duke at Carolina—the "big" game in the state despite their records. Duke to win by a TD. 5. Yale at Harvard—the Ivy's big game. Yale to win the title. Others around the country: California over Stanford, Syracuse over West Virginia, Penn State over Pitt, Oregon State over Oregon, Oklahoma over Nebraska, Kansas over Missouri, Purdue over Indiana, Houston over Tulsa, Ohio State over Michigan, LSU over Tulane, Florida over Wake Forest, South Carolina over Clemson, Virginia over Maryland, and Tennessee over Kentucky. Nov. 28: Presbyterian over Newberry, Virginia Tech over VMI, Texas over Texas A&M, and Lenoir-Rhyne over Catawba. Nov. 30: Army over Navy, Auburn over Alabama, Houston over Florida State, Tennessee over Vanderbilt, Southern California over Notre Dame (giving USC National Title), Mississippi over Mississippi State, Georgia over Georgia Tech, and Miami over Florida. Coach Jerry Steele's cagers play UNC-Charlotte at nine p.m. after Pembroke State tangles with Greensboro College at seven p.m. The following evening the losers play at seven while the winners meet for the championship at nine. UNC-Charlotte, coached by Harvey Murphy, welcomes back seven lettermen including All-Dixie Conference guard Jerry Anthony, and returning starters Bob Lemmon, Pete Donahue, and Ben Basinger. The 49ers are expected to be greatly improved over last year's team which was routed 125-51 by the Quakers. Greensboro College, defending Dixie Conference champions, return eight lettermen led by Jim Radford, Steve Morgan, Dean Oldham, and Randy Hunter. New coach Milton Reece's squad opened the season last week with a 67-58 win over UNC-G. Pembroke State College, headed by coach Lacey Gane comes to Greensboro with eleven returning lettermen from last season's 20-9 squad. Missing is Ail-American Joe Gallagher. Guilford also acts as the host team for the first annual Triad Holiday Festival, December 27 and 28 at Grimsley High School. Four high school teams along with Guilford, Wilmington, Hampden-Syndey, and Glassboro State of New Jersey make up the field. The high schools play a round-robin tourney while the colleges play for a championship trophy. Wilmington and Hampden-Syd ney meet in the first round as do Guilford and Glassboro. The Quakers play two other non-conference foes during the season. Wilmington College comes here December 7 while Guilford makes the return trip to the coast February 8. The Seahawks, coached by Bill Brooks, always provide top-flight competition. New to the Quaker athletic schedules is St. Augustine's College of Raleigh. The CIAA member boasts two fine performers in co-captains Ray Gilmore and Gary Waytes. Coach Jesse Clements' squad comes to Alumni gym February 15.
