"To my knowledge there has been no discussion among board members about any candidate for any position on next year's Monday, April 6, 1970 staff. I personally have been very pleased with Craig's work. Al though 1 have vigorously op posed many of the stands he has taken, I think he has handled a difficult job with intelligence and considerable skill." The rumor was circulated by a student who said Mrs. Dela field assured him that the Publi cations Board would never sup port Craig Chapman for another term as THE GUILFORDIAN editor. Craig Chapman, editor of THE GUILFORDIAN, has an nounced that THE GUIL FORDIAN is on strike. The strike stems from a dispute be tween the newspaper and the Student Legislature over THE GUILFORDIAN'S budget re quest for the 1970-1971 school year. In announcing the decision of the staff, Chapman said that THE GUILFORDIAN would continue to publish eight pages on a regular weekly schedule. However he said that for the duration of the strike, the news paper would accept for publica tion only news copy on strike developments and advertising. Finance Committee The budget dispute between the Student Legislature and THE GUILFORDIAN arose March 23 when the legislature accepted a Legislature Finance Committee recommendation that THE GUILFORDIAN'S budget re quest of $6,809 for the 1970-1971 school year be trimmed to $5,300. The $1509 budget cut was money designated as salaries for the editor and associate editors. Chapman Cites 'Need' During the course of debate on THE GUILFORDIAN'S budget, Craig Chapman argued that SISOO was needed "to re tain and attract qualified staff members as well as to serve as a 'cushion' in the event that THE GUILFORDIAN'S advertising campaign falls short of its pro jected goal." In addition Chapman main tained that "most colleges with quality newspapers pay salaries to publication staff members." Southerland States Position However Carl Southerland, president of the College Union, GuUjordian Begins Strike Schedule urged the legislature to reject the request for proposed GUILr FORDIAN salaries on the grounds that "if we do it for one organization we will have to do it for others." In addition several other stu dents argued that the proposed salaries would necessitate a hike in the student activity fee which would place a financial hardship on students who are "working their way through college." Last Year Last year, the Student Legis lature turned down THE GUIL FORDIAN'S request for salaries. Acceptance of the proposal for GUILFORDIAN staff salaries would have added about $1.50 (.75 per semester) to the student activity fee for next year. Next year the cost of attending Guilford for one year (including tuition, room, board, and fees) will total approxi mately $2,500. This Year THE GUILFORDIAN has paid $l2O in salaries to staff members this year. The money was paid with the approval of the Publications Board, Student Government Association president Dan Hul burt, and Legislature Finance Committee chairman Richard Sifferlen after the funds became available due to a reduction in printing costs this fall. Most supporters of GUIL FORDIAN staff salaries in cluding GUILFORDIAN editor Craig Chapman maintain that the legislature should provide salaries for leadership positions in the College Union, the Stu dent Legislature, and other cam pus organizations as well as THE GUILFORDIAN.
