| BASIB Dance Pics Inside g VOL. LIV New Food Service Discussed The possibility of changing food services was discussed by the student legislature at the meeting of April 20. Joel New announced that there was a possibility that indi vidual charges for board may be increased by S4O. Dale Mandel resigned his position as chairman of the food committee after a brief speech on the lack of student interest and support. John Andrews was elected to replace Mandel. The Members of the legisla ture voted to table discussion on the matter of food services and prices until May 4 when the food committee could give a report. At the May 4 meeting legisla tors will decide whether to re tain or to renew the school's contract with ARA Slater Food Company or to open a new contract with Saga Food Serv ices. Trustee Report Dan Hulburt reported on the meeting of the Board of Trustees held April 25. Hulburt is an observer of the board meetings. Hulburt explained that Units of Living could go into effect only if it received the support of two thirds of the resident stu dents in a campus wide election. This election will be held May 11. Hulburt announced that ac cording to North Carolina state laws students could not drink alcoholic beverages anywhere except in their private rooms. He was not sure whether or not drinking was permitted in the suite parlors of 1968 dorm. Women's Hours Legislators also discussed the decision of the Administrative Council to recommend the rota tion system of self-regulation in spite of the majority support for the key system. SAC Reply A petition requesting the repeal of an Honor Board verdict of guilty for the offense of plagiarism was rejected by the SAC at a meeting held April 28. The student's petition was rejected as being without merit and the penalty of a failing grade for the course remains in effect. The SAC said that a plea of ignorance of plagiarism stand ards is not a valid defense for a junior at Guilford College. The interdisciplinary program will include various aspects of all fields of social science with particular emphasis of econo mics. Research will stress manage ment and control of conflict, the proglems of disarmament, and the conversion of industries away from the production of war materials. The program will be offered next September and will offer master's and doctoral degrees. Three to five students will be enrolled in the first term of the program. Eventually, the total enrollment will be no more than fifteen. In a telephone interview with THE GUILFORDIAN last week, Ed Mendenhall, a partner in Mendenhall-Moore Realtors of High point, who is a Guilford College trustee, charged that the State of North Carolina had re vealed aspects of negotiations over controversial Baldhead Island before the negotiations were in fact completed. Mendenhall made the charge in answer to a question concern ing the present state of the negotiations between Carolina Cape Fear Company, the State of North Carolina, and Frank Sherrill, owner of the island. Mendenhall replied, "We don't reveal aspects of the negotiations Spillman Receives NSF Math Award David Spillman has been ac cepted as a participant in the National Science Foundation undergraduate research program in mathematics. The program will be conducted at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He has received a four-hundred dollar stipend plus a one hundred dollar travel al lowance from the University. Spillman is the only student at Guilford College in the Cur riculum II program. Mendenhall went "on to clari fy that he is the President of the Carolina Cape Fear Corporation and that W.R. Henderson is the Chairman of the Board of the Corporation. Several North Carolina newspapers had er roniously stated that Henderson was President of the corpora tion. The Carolina Cape Fear Cor poration is presently attempting to buy Baldhead Island for de velopment into a resort area. The State of North Carolina, heeding conservationists' pleas, wishes to turn the island into a State Park. study for "students who in their first two years have demonstrat ed intellectual talent, imagina tion, self-direction as well as a high level of academic achieve ment." In March of 1969 the Guil ford College Mathematics De partment published its first Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics. Students nation wide contribute to this journal.
