Dorm continued from page 1 had not been eager to enter without permission, promptly stopped. Before the termination of the search, two cases of drinks had been located in Milner, and some veal had been discovered in the common room of a suite in '6B. In view of all the opposition the staff inolved began to have second thoughts concerning their involvement. A meeting of the student personnel staff was called for 6:30 to discuss what had happened. Present were Vicki Morgan, Don Woodside, Jim Newlin Cliff Lowery, Charlie White, Tom Quiesser, Ken Schwab, Dick Woodard,Carl Southerland, Joel New and this reporter. -Jeanette Ebel arrived shortly after the beginning of the meeting and Dean Lanier arrived from a conference in Atlanta shortly before the end. Most present felt the need of a statment, but what was to go into it was the subject of a considerable amount of discussion. Suggestions ranged from an explanation to a public apology. The six-hour meeting resulted in a one-page statement. WANTED One White Southern Bigot To play in "The Man Nobody Saw" Drawl Preferred Contact Head Resident New Men's Dorm Lan & Sylvia will Play Dec. 5 The popular singers of "progressive country" music, lan & Sylvia, will appear in concert with The Great Speckled Bird at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Dana Auditorium. Tickets now are on sale at the Guilford College Student Union, concert sponsor, and will be available at the door on the evening of the performance. Lan Tyson and Sylvia Fricker were born in Canada. He worked as a migrant laborer, a loggei and rodeo performer until a rodeo accident when he was 19 led him to the guitar and a deepening pursuit of the folk and country styles of Canada d the songs of Kentucky and Tennesee. Sylvia received her early musical training from her mother, but for the most part she is self taught, an accomplished performer on the guitar, autoharp and piano. Lan and Sylvia met in 1959, began working together professionally in 1960 and were married in 1964. From the first, they have been recognized for a rare ability to personalize their material. Since their fifth best-selling album, they moved deeper New Exp Joel New, Chairman of Legislature and one of the instigators of the room search of November 20, released this statement to the GUILFORDIAN. New stated that he had intended to deliver this message to the Legisalture at their November 30 meeting which was adjourned when a roll call did not establish a quorum. On Friday, Nov. 20 Milner and '6B dormitories were searched for specific items (stolen food and beverages)-only. This action was taken under the authority of the Dean of Student's Office. For my involvement--a joint decision was required. 1 felt that my position lay with the college community in the greater sense, and any decision was made in the light of what I felt, at that time, would reflect the concerns and investemenst of students. At that time, I did not want to see the police on campus. I wanted to see the matter hanlded internally. I also, wanted to see some action taken, and at that point felt that time was an important factor. The natural right of possession of the students had been violated, repeatedly. There were not only thefts from the cafeteria involved, but also from the drink truck parked in front of Milner. This was not first time. (Royal Crown expressed that they were stfongly considering **Qb *r ■■ Tfi • >•.: into country music, and their last four albums were recorded in Nashville It was there that the musicians who backed them formed The Great Speckled Bird to cast their lots with lan & Sylvia. Their music is lively and country-spiced, but is dominated by lan and THE GUILFORDIAN with-drawing service from the college.) This was the motive for my actions. I ask for your understanding. As we all know hindsight is better than foresight. It quickly became evident that there were numerous ways in which this situation might have been handled; but the act is already done--the mistakes made. I came to a position where I had to make a decision, and that decision has proven not to have been the best. For this I am sorry. I apologize. For myself I intend to see that the right of privacy of students never again be violated in this way, and that a method of due process for investigative searches be established and adhered to in the future. I only hope that we can all profit from this mistake, turn it into something positive, work toward new, larger, and stronger committments, and resolve and confirm a stronger unity. Jk : V 4 jv Mark Hatfield Speaks Republican Senator Mark 0. Hatfield of Oregon spoke at 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 3, at Dana Auditorium on the Guilford College Arts Series. Hatfield, who served for two terms as Governor of BSC Supports Strike continued from page 2 who had broken his arm because he had no where else to wait sat outside the building on a wooden bench for an hour before he was taken to the hospital. And then there is the wage dispute. The blind workers all have their salary supplemented by the state commission for the blind, which in itself shows the inadequacy of the wages. According to Bailey, the blind workers are seeking wage hike up to $2.10 pej hour, as opposed to the $1.22 beginning rate. As previously stated, Skillcraft employs approximately 112 blind people of which 62 are black. There is a glaring absense of black supervisors, department heads, trainers and there are no blacks on the Board of Statement on Search This statement, written by the Student Personnel staff and several students on the evening of Friday, November 20, was used as an immediate response to student concern over the room searches earlier that day. The repeated theft of materials and food from the Guilford College campus has created a great concern among students and administration. This concern was brought to a head following the theft and vandalism Thursday--a large amount of food was stolen from the cafeteria and seven cases of soft drinks were stolen from an RC truck parked outside of Milner. Several students and several members of the administration met to express their concerns. At this time a joint decision was made by the group to proceed to Milner and '6B Dorm to investigate. In retrospect, the people involved have agreed that there was a serious error in the judgment to enter rooms without students' permission before exhauting all other alternatives. The error in execution is not to be confused with the definite need for some kind of positive action to bring thefts to an end. The group recognizes that it is the policy at Guilford to make every effort to respect the privacy of students, and it is hoped that this policy will henceforth be maintained. PAGE 3 M. Oregon Defore being elected to the United States Senate in 1966, co-authored the McGovern-Hatfield Amendment to End the War in Vietnam. Trustees. Also only one black blind worker operates one of the larger piece goods machines, and of course, the salary is higher for the machine operators. This is not simply a question of economics, but a story of man's inhumanity to man. The company's Board of Directors snubbed their noses at the workers' attempts to negotiate longstanding grievances. What can the workers do? According to Tom Bailey at this point our power lies in the number of people we mobilize to show support for the blind strikers. iShow your support to the blind strikers, financially, spiritually and physically contact Tom Bailey at the GAPP office, 9141/2 Gorrell St. or phone 275-8588.
