PAGE 8 Thk and Thai Cream of the Crop Bv Thorn Rednour Well, folks, it seems that I got a lotta feedback on that last review, but then the public will believe practically anything they read, so what's a poor boy to do 'cept join a rock &. roll band We were all feeling pretty strange between Christmas and exams, weren't we? That's all I wanted to know. And now, short shots on some important overlooked albums of merit. FLEETWOOD MAC/Future Gaines (Reprise RS 6465). There are established bands and new bands everywhere, but not one quite like Fleetwood Mac. FM has gone thru some incredible changes in personnel over the years, starting with the original line-up of Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie & Mick Fleetwood, with Danny Kirwan joining by the second album. That line-up was fixed for three albums, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac; English Rose and Then Play On. Starting with the excellent TPO, it gets odd. Peter Green, the main mover left and the band just kept on rolling along, with more emphasis on rock in Kiln House. Right after Kiln House, Christine Perfect (McVie) joined, Spencer left and a new guitarist from California, Bob Welch joined. You'd think with all those changes, and all happening between albums that Fleetwood Mac would suffer. No siree. Three almost entirely different albums, each perfect. Especially Future Games , from mellow tunes like "Women of A Thousand Years" and "Sands of Time" to pure movers, like "What A Shame" and "Lay It All Down," this album flows. I haven't heard of any new changes, but I'm sure if there -— —-—.. 7ct*S>|>\ " ~~1 f€Mee A (cheep ) V c.eet> J /r//rz£, ) \~ en6EP/ -v -/ [OweerM h^ 3 —l h#-1 l —Sk? COMMANDER CODY AND HIS LOST PLANET AIRMLN/ Lost In The Ozone (Paramount PAS 6017). As many of my Iriends at wonderful WQFS will agree, this is the album of 1971. Commander Cody has been around for many years, but has never recorded anything. Well world, he's here and he's great. Countryfied rock and roll with some of the most incredible (inane?) lyrics, to wit: "I've told you a million times how I love you/Honey you're old fickle heart won't let me in/so I'll just relax with this glass of gin/head for the ozone again. I'm lost in the ozone again/I'm lost in the ozone again/one drink of wine, two drinks of gin/and I'm lost in the ozone again."* With music like this, you can't have a worry (or a brain). Sparkling is the only word to describe the music The Lost Planet Airmen pro duce. Hot shit geetar and pedal steel plus a zillion more instru ments, including brass. Just picture eight loony people on a stage swirling to the pulsating rhythm of the soft-shoe, beer drinking "What's The Matter Now?" and then bouncing right alone into "20 Elight Rock," with Andy Stein, Bill Kirchen providing the ompapas and capped off with the boogie, "Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar" in which everyone from Buffaloe Bruce Barlow to West Virginia Creeper showing off their, yes, incredible talent while at the same time making you physically ill. I've been waiting for a band like this since the old Mothers. Get It and soon you'll be back to "Seeds and Stems (Again)." (3H53P TiKKiHLg THE GUILFORMAN I RAFI- \C/The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (Island SW-9306). Steve Winwood and friends are back in the studio and the results are as expected of Winwood, et al. Another gem. I'm running out of room, so just let me say that you won't be disappointed. Title track and "Rock & Roll Stew" stand out. I just wish that someday Traffic will release an album with more than six cuts (picky-picky). SOME SHORT NOTES: English imports again. You're feeble collection of trash manu factured by American companies would be greatly enhanced by the addition of English records. Lotsa stuff released there won't ever be over here and the pressings are much better. Musts include Humble Pie/Town And Country; The Best of Jeff Beck (Including "I've Been Drink ing"); Syd Barrett/77?e Madcap Laughs and the Beatles /Let It Be (with a great book of photos). If you would like info on imported records, send one buck to Records, Ltd. Import/Export; 2818 West Pico Blvd; Los Angeles, California 90006 and they'll send you a catalog full of little goodies, and at reasonable prices, too. One last item, the new Stones album, out some time in February will be called bat It. We're working on getting a radio series by Firesign Theatre called "Dear Friends." More abou that later, and next issue some words on an underated English man, Rory Gallagher. I'm gonna go get lost in the Ozone again see you there (we're here Guilford is the Ozone). *( B. C.
