PAGE FOUR The Doctor's Bag By Arnold Werner, M.D Copyright, 1973 Question: While walking along a trail in a park, I was attacked and raped. Fortu nately, before too much hap pened, some people came up the trail and my unknown assailant fled. His penis did not penetrate very far and due to a lack of time, no se men was released. A few days after this hap pened, a white vaginal dis charge appeared and there seemed to be some irritation inside. There is a slight possi bility that a small amount of dirt could have entered the vagina. Could this discharge be the result of gonorrhea or a related disease? Or is it just an infection from possible presence of dirt? I have told no one of this incident, and I am under a great deal of stress to find the answers to my questions. This incident hap pened a few months ago, and the discharge has been with me since that time. Answer: Following sexual assault by an unknown man, a woman should always visit a physician as soon as possible. Appropriate treatment should pay attention to the psycho logical state of the victim and in addition should include a careful examination for in fection and other damage. Venereal disease definitely can be transmitted in the type of situation you describe. If ejaculation did occur, and if there is any chance of preg nancy resulting, the use of ap propriate hormones to pre vent such pregnancy is also in dicated. The likelihood of dirt entering the vagina and caus ing an infection is small. How ever, some irritation could have resulted and this could produce a vaginal discharge. At this time you still should see a physician for an exami nation. Although the legal investi gation of rape may have a number of primitive and harsh aspects to it, I urge women to report such incidents to the police immediately. While some unenlightened police and courts may make the vie- Revolutionary 7-7-3 Program Introduced Forest Grove, Ore.- (1.P.) - In a two-year study leading up to recent reforms, the Committee on Long-Range Goals said if Pacific Univer sity is to attain a distinctive ness to make it visible, if Pac ific is to become more viable against growing competition, the curriculum changes would have to be truly substantive The devices by which these sweeping changes will be ushered in? Deceptively modest-sounding ones, really. They're called the "Three- One" and "Seven - Seven Three" programs. "Three-One" refers to the four years a student spends at college. Formal academic work will be condensed into the first three years. The fourth year, with the possible exception of the final weeks, will be spent in the field - perhaps abroad, or in other parts of the country -- where the student will receive super vised, practical experience in a field he hopes to pursue. Tim feel as if she is the accus ed, many agencies are making a strenuous attempt to deal kindly and discretely with the victim. In any case, the victim of such a crime owes it to all of us to help apprehend the rapist. Question: I am up against a problem. In the last year I acquired a 35mm camera and I like to photograph many varied things including ani mals, scenery, places, events, etc. But, after observing vari ous publications I naturally wanted to try my hand on nude and semi-nude women. I know many girls and carry on sexual activities with all of them. But, when I mention or bring out my camera, they are all turned off. Why is this and what, if anything, can I do to overcome their hesitancy? Answer: Some letters just naturally have more appeal to me than others. This one has some professional merits and is also amusing because of my own interest in photo graphy. You count yourself as pretty skilled with women but it strikes me that you are awfully naive about them at the same time. The women you have been going out with are sufficiently circumspect to not want to become part of a collection you are intent on acquiring. It is one thing to model, for which one re ceives a fee and which is con sidered a professional activity, and another thing to record for posterity one's sexual in volvements. For many people sexual involvements are con sidered highly private matters and this seems to be the case for women more than men, or at least for more women than it is for you. The hesi tancy your friends are demon strating is probably a reflec tion of their uncertainty about your motives, which may be good judgment. From a technical point of view, photographing the hu man figure is not that simple. While potentially graceful and pleasing to the eye, the hu man figure can also appear awkward and unappealing, making you wish you had stuck to your fantasies. Under "Seven - Seven - Three", the annual academic calendar is divided into six periods of time -- two terms of seven weeks each; a three week term; two more seven week terms; and a final term of three weeks. During the seven-week sessions, a student may enroll for two academic courses and for only one dur ing the three-week term. And therein lies the beau ty, according to the editors of Pacific Today. Their recent "A Time For Change" issue points out that "Seven-Seven- Three" is designed to avoid diluting the student's atten tion. One of the things wrong with higher education is that when a student carries as many as five or six courses over a 14-week semester, a couple of two-hour courses usually get only "back-burn ner" attention, at best. The student might juggle his major courses until his standing in the two-hour course seems in peril. Then he GUILFORDIAN Question: I'm a 19 year old man. I have no problem with acne except two or three days after a sexual encounter when my face and especially my back, breaks out. Can you wcptein this? Answer: No. Question: When I obtain an erection, my penis is 5 Vi mches in length, which is just fine with me. However, when my penis hangs limp it can vary from one inch to four inches in length. Is this nor mal. or would you advise see °rg a doctor? I purposely stay out of any situation which might involve a shower with other men because I am em barrassed. Answer: You describe a perfectly normal situation. The size of the unerect penis is not very related to the size of the erect penis. The small ones get much bigger while the big ones increase only slightly. Any man who has been watching his penis will observe that it can vary tremendously in size depend ing upon body temperature and degree of activity, among other things. Throw away your tape measure and live a little. Question: I know that electrolysis is the best way to remove unwanted hair from a woman's upper lip. A few girls I have talked to feel that shav ing off such hair will cause it to grow back darker, coarser, and thicker. I find it very hard to think that shaving will cause more hairs to grow out of one's face, i.-e. new ones in addition to those cut off be fore. Answer: Shaving does not change the quantity of hair. However, the blunt ends that result give a false appearance of thickness and they do feel bristly. Small amounts of hair on the upper lip can be man aged by shaving, cutting close ly or by using a bleaching cream to lighten them and make them less conspicuous. Such a cream can be made of 6% hydrogen peroxide and soap flakes or a solution of 1 oz. of peroxide and 20 drops of ammonia. gives it enough attention to boost the grade up to what ever level with which he feels comfortable. In terms of grades, that may be okay. But it isn't learning. "Seven-Seven-Three" simply takes the same number of class hours of a traditional semester and ounches them into smaller segments so that the student takes two courses at a time, and pours all of his attention into in-depth study. The old semester is gone. "Seven-Seven-Three" sim plifies, reduces course proli feration and concentrates energy. Students take two courses during "Seven," one course during "Three." The new calendar, too, according to the editors, forc es a "re-think" on all courses, Professors will change method and content so that formal coursework becomes a build ing block toward field exper ience. Both films will be gin at 8 p.m. in Dana Audi torium. Guilford students will be admitted free with I.D. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is the story of Klaatu (Michael Rennie) who comes from a planet 250 mil lion miles away and lands his spaceship in Washington, D.C. Representing a far more ad vanced civilization, he comes to earth in peace, but is wel comed by hostile troops and a gittery G.l.'s bullet. Therein begins the intriguing story of his escape and recovery in a Washington boarding house. TIME said: "By far the best of Hollywood's recent flights into science-fiction, combines a glimpse into the futuristic marvels of outer space with a thoughtful look at the seedy old earth of 1951. Like THE THING, it is the story of a visitor from another planet. But Klaatu is no villainous monster; he is an ultra-civilized human be ing who makes the earthmen, by contrast, look like a mon strous race of Yahoos. "Klaatu's escape touches off a vast monster-hunt, de monstrating the earthling's frightening capacity for panic, ignorance, unreasoning hostil ity and pygmy-minded self seeking." The film is directed by Robert Wise, who directed THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and THE HAUNTING, shown earlier this year. Although the film was made in 1951, the message remains pertinent to today's society. Also starring Voluntary Action Washington, D.C. 20013 THURSDAY APRIL 5, 1973 are Patricia Neal, Billy Gray, and Sam Jaffe. THE DAMNED represents the interest in the value of protest on the part of Luch ino Visconti, acclaimed as one of the leading film directors of our time. The film, which probes the soul of Germany on the eve of Nazi power, has been described by Judith Crist as "A shattering experience in the watching and unfor gettable detailing of damna tion in the recall! Such is the power of Visconti's visuals that the eye strays not for a moment." In 1968, when Luchino Visconti was in New York to direct "The Marriage of Fi garo" at the Metropolitan Op era House, he observed, "I have the impression that the ferment among young people in the United States is more sincere than perhaps it is else where. Here the concrete pro test can be both beneficial and necessary under certain conditions." Since that time, Visconti has written and directed "The Damned," which states un equivocably Visconti's views on the value of protest. "I am making "The Damned" for the generations who do not know what Naz ism was like," the director said. In pointing the finger of responsibility at German industrialists who helped create the madness of the Se cond World War by backing Hitler with vital arms, Vis conti points out, "The young people must understand that it is the absence of protest that constitutes the blackest evil in my drama. In this film, the leaders of a vital steel empire choose profits and personal power rather than obstruct 'that gentleman from Berlin'." 'BiKc S*®.
