THE GHILFORDIAN Goitford College Senate Candidates Present Views Harrington by Ted Harrington It is time to look inward, to solidly form our future so that we may carry on the good of the present, and not make the mistakes we are presently so adamantly against. Today, the colleges and universities are processing depersonalized students at an incredible rate. We at Guilford College are not in this tragic situation. We go to a school still concerned with the individual. Whatever this is due to, Guilford College is still concerned with develop ing a sense of community, of belonging and contributing to the College and the world. I fear many of us are passing this opportunity for an easier life, where the responsibilities of being a student, a Guilfordian, even a human being are suppressed. Today's apathy is tomorrow's mistake. We should learn here what will help us in the future. If we kill apathy here and now, we will have accomplished more than one can imagine. It seems an impossible task, but we must start somewhere. The way to do this is to convince you, that your words and ideas are important to Guilford. John Janney, Early Evans and myself are not promising that we can make Guilford better and more interesting for each and everyone of you. If we are elected to the executive board of Guilford's community Senate, you have our solemn promise that we will try to make your education more rounded, and relevant to today's world. As elected representatives we must have an understanding with all of you; you must advise us what to do, and give us ideas, so that we may support your rights as students. We have ideas of our own. The first is to achieve greater student representation in the decision-making process. The economic belt is tightening all around, and we need to have a say in how and why Guilford cuts corners. We pay for a sizeable portion of this school budget, the school is for us, and we deserve to be heeded. We plan to re-evaluate our own student budget (aprox. 68,000 dollars) next year in the Senate. The next area of attention is communications. We already have a central information telephone number, 299-8893, but this is not enough. With the advent of New Founders, a good central information center, there is a chance to establish better communica tion all over the campus. One idea is to place faculty mail boxes in Founders so that there will be more interaction between students and faculty. We also think that WQFS can be better used to tell what is happening on campus. We want to integrate this communication change into the life of the day student, as we feel that they are more or less uniformed. John, Early and myself have other ideas for general improvement. We want all of you to give us any and all ideas you may have to add or change Guilford. The cafeteria is being changed around. The bookstore needs drastic im provements, as well as many other areas. One student has suggested that we build small bicycle ramps at strategic curbs. Ideas such as this may seem insignificant compared to the overall picture, but they are not. We hope to prove to all of you that we are concerned, willing and cap able of representing you. From now on, if anyone has an idea, please contact one of the three of us; and you will be listened to. We welcome any suggestions. John Janney lives in Milner 251. Early Evans lives in Hobbs 23. At present I am a day student, but my daylight hours are spent on 2nd Floor North in Milner. All of us may be reached through the campus mail or via the cafeteria stick-board. Please support us so that we may support you. Greensboro, N.C. 27410 Neill Doug Neill, Cindy Buxton, and Crystal Duval are in the running for the offices of President, Vice-President (Treasurer) and Secretary of the Community Senate. Doug Neill, a junior Psychology major, has been a participating member of the following committees: Bud get, Curriculum, and Food. Last year he served as a Senator and a Being-Human Teaching Assistant. Presently he is an intern in Milner, Chairman of Campus Judicial Board, a member of Student Advisory Council, and of the recently formed ad hoc Committee investigating the housing-security decision. Cindy Buxton, a junior History major, has been a participating member of the Freshmen Fellows Program, Summer School Abroad, and the Choir, She is presently the Senator from 2nd floor Binford. Crystal Duval, a junior History major, has been a Dana Scholar for two years, was an active member on the Teacher Evaluation Commit tee, participated on the Committee to the Faculty and is now an intern in Bryan. She has had secretarial experience through working in the Art and English Departments. * * * Here are several ideas we would like to see implemented at Guilford: 1. Placing one student representative on each stand ing committee of the Board of Trustees to improve commun ications. 2. New options for housing, i.e. halls by academic interest, another co-op dorm. 3. Closer, and more frequent review of faculty performance by the Promotion and Tenure Committee. 4. 24 Hour infirmary service, a visiting gynecologist and increased physician avail ability. Closer follow-up of student funds (spent by campus organizations) to prevent misuse. 6. In the past there have been several issues that have caused division among sec tions of the Guilford Commu nity. Beer in the "Wonder" and visitation are the more notable. We feel that it is now time to work with the administration to find suitable methods of resolving these issues. These are just a few of the ideas we have had - if you have any questions, sugges tions, or comments, please call us - Doug, 294-1173, Cindy, 299-2244, Crystal, 294-6655. We're enthusiastic and want to do something for this school! February 25, 1975 Election Day March 4 Tuesday, March 4, is election day for Senate and Union Officers.
