Page 2 EDITORIAL Guilford County Senator McNeill Smith's proposal to set aside one lane of the soon to be widened Friendly Avenue as a bicycle route has been rejected by N.C. Secretary of Transportation Troy Doby. According to Doby, Friendly Avenue is being designed for the automobile, not the bicycle. The road is going to be widened this summer to five lanes from near the airport to Westridge Road in Greensboro. In a letter to Sen. Smith Doby stated, "The hundreds, or perhaps thousands, who may use their bicycles in the Friendly Road area will not decrease the automobile demand or usage of the highway sufficient to warrant the exclusive use of a traffic lane by bicycles." He cited statistics estimating that 31,000 vehicles per day will be using Friendly by 1991, compared to 12,000 now. While we are duly impressed by the Transportation Department's attempt to make long range projections, we must seriously question the reliability of these statistics. The amount of automobile travel will depend upon the availability and cost of gasoline. Even the Middle Eastern oil producers do not expect the supply to last much more than 20 years. We feel that realistic long range planning must include accomodations for laternative forms of transportation. Mr. Doby is fostering greater dependence upon the automobile. Many 0 f the "crises" we now face are the result of short sighted decisions such as this. The bicycle should not have to compete against the automobile for road space. Those who chose the non-polluting, resource saving, and healthful form of transportation deserve some guarantee of safety. Letters Editor, I would like to respond to Donald Gibbon's recent letter to the Guilfordian. I find the views expressed therein as selfish as he believes the characteristics of the ERA to be. Contrary to his beliefs the ERA will not smother his family structure, it will not prevent him from staying in his family structure as a father, working beside and providing for mother and family (a role he believes his present social structure has tended to prevent him from becoming effective in), and Donald Gibbon will still be THE GUOLFOKDIAN Edt0w............................................David Gnn Nawa Joa Hlntnb M—nhn Edit0r...............................80b JdbatM Sparta Edtar...„—.....—.. What I believe he cannot understand is that there are members of our society who do not want to be provided for - who do not want to be kept by a brother. Can't he let us maintain equality, become self-supportive, independent and free from the limited providorship that presently exists if that is what we choose? The ERA will not destroy the present family structure, instead it should help others The Guilfordian UHfITT>tD YOUIOIN WBi,F®ST WE \m KU. Marybeth Donaldson Dear Editor: We would like to express our appreciation to President Hobbs for his appearance at the pro-ERA hearing in Raleigh last month. Not merely by his presence did he affirm his support but he also took the occasion to briefly state the reasons for his stance. Not the least impor tant of these was his recognition that as one of the first co-educational schools in the country Guilford has, almost since its inception, emodied the spirit of equality reflected in this amendment. Moreover, we would also like to state that we have found both Grimsley and Lois Ann Hobbs supportive of women's issues in general and of the need for women's studies in particular. We hope they will continue to lend their encouragement and support in the future. The Guilford College Women's Coalition time and will let you know that, too, this appeal is addressed. Too often all we can do is complain about their action. Well, I for one, would like to compliment the administration on an action that has been called for for several years. I'm referring to the drop of their ban on alchohol at school functions. After being away for a year, return to last Friday's coffee house beer bust was just great! I loved every drop of it. It's about time the administration dropped outdated Quaker ideas about drinking, and let us move our kegs out of our room and suites and into places that have enough room. April 1, 1975 Union Questionaire Next Thursday there will be an opportunity to make your voice heard in next year's Union. A comprehensive survey of how you feel the Student Union should be and do next year will be taken. The questionnaire has been compi led over the last two weeks and is pretty thorough. In order to be thorough it has to be a bit long. It will take a couple of minutes and a bit of thought; we hope you'll take the time to fill it out. After all a few minutes of your time now should help make next year's Union more to your liking. One of the questions will deal with whether you would be willing to "contribute" a dime when you see one of our films. Many Unions charge SI.OO to see a film (Duke charges $2.00). We strongly feel a dime from each person will help us bring more expensive, better films to campus next year. Even if you see all the films next year it will only cost about $4.00 for nine months of films. Film rental rates are going up and the Union will be lucky to get the amount of money it got last year. We strongly feel none of us will miss a dime and that you will find next year s films better because of it. The questionnaire can be filled out this Thursday. April 3, at lunch and dinner. Day students can fill it out at the library from 10:00 - 5:00. If you want the Union to reflect your wishes, we must know what they are. The next thing I want to see is beer in the Grill room. We students need some place to get a quiet beer. Yours truly a happy senior /uiV* A , i I VOUA \ " ffft) lvke*n /.
