Photo by Clark Women Quakers Play Valiantly But Drop Pembroke Game 57-54 by Betsy Mackenzie Returning after a long Christmas vacation and only four practices the Quakers lost a real heartbreaker to Pembroke State University on Thursday, Jan. 15th. The first half went slowly for the Quakers with Pem broke taking control. Working with a new offense and Pembroke's anticipation of plays were the main problems for the Quakers. Due to an injury, Janet Falls was taken out of the game. With a halftime score 23-17, Pembroke's favor, the Qua kers decided it was their turn to take the lead. With a change in offense the determined Quakers shot the Basketball Intramurals Signups for intramural basketball were held Monday and Tuesday in the cafeteria. Anyone, especially day stu dents, who missed the signups are asked to contact Mrs. Clark in the gym (Ext. 60) immediately. The Quakers worked together and got their momentum up, making Pembroke struggle to get points. Trouble came for the Quakers when Gail Brown fouled out with only five minutes left in the game. Salem College UNC-Charlotte Salem College Division 111 Tournament The Guilfordian Quakes 10-2, Nationally Ranked Ray Branch and Gary Devlin combined talents to lead the Guilford College Quakers to an exciting Carolinas Confer ence win over Elon Saturday evening with a score of 81-72. The win lifted Guilford's Carolina Conference mark to 5-0 and put their overall mark at 10-2. And this puts the Quakers respectably high in the National standing at 15th! as ranked by the latest NAIA Poll. As before mentioned, Ray Branch and Gary Devlin were the stars of the game, pulling down 28 rebounds and scoring 23 points respectively, making this game the Quaker's 25th Carolinas Conference regular season win. "This is a very hard place for us to win a game in. I think this is the third time in 20 years that we've won here, including the one we got last year." The win did not come easily for the Quakes, as they had to work, coming from behind 4-0 at the outset of the game. 48-42 was the halftime lead for the Quakes, but the second half spelled trouble as they saw their 6 point lead dwindle. Elon's Brad Ballou tied up the score 69 all when he hit a jumper with 4 minutes remaining in the game., Sam Kennedy came through in the clutch, though, hitting two baseline jumpers upping Women's Basketball Roster NAME POS. Gary Devlin then "stole the show" when he fired one of his best passes over to Paul Drechsler on a break-away, and put his team well up front, 75-69. It was then Quaker ball control offense all the way, and Gary Devlin unfailingly hit foul shot after foul shot, and the Guilford team polished off their 10th sweet victory of the season. Their loss dropped Elon to an overall 5-6 record, and their C.C. mark at 4-2. You can see the Quakers in action at their next home game, which will be against High Point College. These two power houses will be contesting at 8, Wednesday in the Crackerbox. One on One and Foul Shooting Added to Intramurak For the first time in the history of Guilford College the school will hold two contests to find out who have the best individual skills in basketball on the Guilford College campus. A one-on-one contest will begin Tuesday night in the gym. First rounds and signups will be held in the gym beginning at 7:00. Men and women will both be competing in seperate competitions. A trophy will be given to the winner. The second contest will be to find out who are the best foul shooters on campus. Dual foul shooting contest will begin soon so watch for signs as to where and when it will begin.
