Former Student Tells
of Military Experience
by Forrest Hughes
The views expressed in this
article do not necessarily
reflect the views of the writer
or the Guilfordian.
If you are an adventurous
woman who doesn't mind
giving up old friends, doesn't
mind living an unsettled life,
and is accessible to a
recruiting officer, the United
States Air Force might be the
place for you.
According to Portia Mc-
Cracken, the military is
"really, really pushing wo
men" into positions where
they have not previously been
accepted. The United States
Air Force Academy has
recently begun to accept
women, and women pilots
have just begun to fly. This
emphasis on equal opportu
nity makes a woman's position
in the military, especially the
Air Force, a particularly
desirable one.

There will be a very
important meeting of the
Senate Food Committee on
Wednesday, January 28, at
12:30 p.m. in the smaller back
dining room of the cafeteria.
All regular members are
urged to attend. As usual,
Ms. McCracken has just
finished serving three years in
a traditionally male branch of
the Air Force, Disaster
Preparedness. In this position
she spent eleven months in
Thailand at the Korat Royal
Thai Air Force Base, prepar
ing for possible aircraft
crashes, imminent attacks by
neighboring countries, and
natural disasters. She was
first stationed at Vance Air
Force Base in Oklahoma,
where she and others had to
keep a special lookout for
tornadoes as well as being
aware of other potential
natural and man-made disas
ters.
Among the benefits of
working in the Air Force, Ms.
McCracken rates advances in
self-esteem very high. She
claims that as a result of her
training, she was able to
greatly develop her own
personal abilities and to create
a new set of values for herself.

Senate - 1/21
The meeting opened with a
moment of silence. There was
no old business.
New Business:
A group of six students and
possibly one faculty member
plan to participate in the
Student United Nations pro
gram this semester. Eliott
Good, representing these
students, came before the
Senate with a request for
supplemental funding. The
total cost was itemized and
estimated at $1,020 dollars.
After lengthy discussion, the
Senate agreed to appropriate
$250.00 dollars which would
pay for transportation and
most of the registration fee.
Senators were asked to
gather suggestions from their
constituencies on how they
would like to see the $6,000
dollars spent. A list will be
compiled and passed to the
campus organizations for
comments and additional
suggestions.
The Concert Committee
(part of the Union) came
before Senate with a request
for additional funds to help
sponsor Serendipity. Their
entertainment plans were
discussed and it was decided
to ask the Concert Committee
to return to Senate with a
more detailed plan listing
alternative activities and
costs.
Jim Newlin reminded the
Senate that it is responsible
for setting the amount of the
activity fee for next semester
(Fall 76*).
Christie Fletcher is in
charge of Senate elections. A
tentative date for elections is
in the first week of March. All
Senators are asked to offer
their help to Christie. Thank
you.

No M
Mugshots!
by Sherri Wall
Have you gotten tired of
those dumb mug shots
underclassmen get every year
in the yearbook. Well so has
this year's Quaker staff. This
year we'll be taking only
group shots, of three people
or more, any where you and
your friends like on campus.
To get your picture taken
follow these easy steps:
1) Through January 28 to
March 4 watch for posters
indicating the time pictures
will be taken on Wednesdays.
The times on each Wednesday
change weekly.
2) After finding a time, see
me. I'll be sitting outside the
cafeteria in the lounge in front
of the Union Office.
3) I'll set up a time and
photographer for you who will
take you and your friend's
pictures anywhere on campus.
Its is our hope on the staff
this year that this system will
lead to a better and certainly
more interesting yearbook. So
get together with two or more
of your friends and get a
picture in and
make it as creative and
original as you like. You
choose the setting, your
friends and your
YEARBOOK.
