Good printed in his platform in
February 15th's issue. He
said there are no scholarships
outside of Dana Scholarships
which are based on academic
ability. On the contrary, there
are several scholarsips offered
yearly which are not based on
need. Among these are the
English, Italian, and History
Department's scholarships.

SENATE MINUTES, 2/23/77
The meeting opened with a
moment of silence. Kim Chinn,
Christie Fletcher and Frank
Keegan were absent.
A correction was made in
last week's minutes. The de
cision regarding campaign
spending limits has not been
made.
Hugh Stohler presented two
proposals to the Senate that
would affect the budgeting
of Student Activity Fees. The
first proposal is based on a
concern about the legal use of
student fees and the prece
dents set by funding organ
izations that are politically and
religiously oriented. The pro
posal is that the Senate
"adopt a clear policy which
establishes that it will not fund
student political organizations
or religious-denominational or
ganizations in the annual

Announcement
Grimsley Hobbs has
announced that as of February
1, 1977, John Bell will
concentrate on a new set of
reponsibilities within the
college's admissions program.
John, who has proven him
self an excellent recruiter, will
be spending more time directly
in the field, in reviewing
admissions folders, and in
interviewing candidates
during their on-campus visits.
His title will be Associate
Director of Admissions.

budgeting process. The Senate
might, however, inform any
such organizations that they
may come to the Senate re
questing special funding for
any particular program, if that
proposed program is clearly not
of partisan or sectarian con
tent." As there was no con
sensus on whether or not to
accept the proposal, Senators
will discuss it with their con
stituents and it will be pre
sented again next week.
The second part of Hugh's
proposal was a recom
mendation that the Senate
re-affirm current budget pol
icies that have not been fol
lowed traditionally. Some of
of the organizations have not
adhered to these policies in
the past few years. The
budget practices in question
were: 1. Returning unex
pended funds in student
functions in Admissions and
Financial Aid during the first
semester, will continue in this
role under a permanent
arrangement. As Special
Assistant to the President, he
will continue responsibility
for the Office of Financial
Aid, and will direct both the
Library and the Office of
Admisions (Main Campus and
Urban Center). The change
is part of an effort to strengthen
admissions operations as we
enter a period of intensified
competition among colleges
and universities for students.

Community Senate account at
the end of the school year.
2. Having all organizations
submit their books to the
Business Office for an audit
during the summer; and that
all organizations submit records
of their income and expenses
to the Treasurer before they
receive their allotments for the
following year.
The Senate approved a
change in the requirements for
Student Emergency Loans.
The fund will still be used
primarily for "unforeseen
medical and family emer
gencies", but may also be
used for other purposes that
are clearly seen to emergen
cies by the Executive Council.
Respectfully submitted,
Amie Williams, Sec.
Community Senate
Williams Wins
The newly-elected President
of the Community Senate is
Amie Williams, with Chong
Lee as Vice-President/
Treasurer, and Nicky
McClemore as Secretary.
The Williams ticket received
62% of the vote, with a total
of 607 votes cast for the four
tickets. The new Executive
Committee will be installed at
the Community senate meet
ing on Wednesday, march 2.
The Williams campaign
platform offered many
practical ideas which apparent
ly appealed to voters. Briefly,
the platform is as follows:
(1) A booklet should be
published which thoroughly
evaluates courses and profes
sors from information compiled
from the findings of a special
committee, interviews, and
student comments.
(2) Students should be
better informed on the Honor
Code. A booklet on the code
should be distributed to all
new students to impress upon
them its importance.
(3) Wednesday should be
kept as a "free" day.
