Quakers Win Tourney
BY DAVID HOTCHKISS
The Guilford College
Basketball team, 7-1, will
travel to High Point Saturday
night in hopes of upping their
Carolina's Conference record
to 2-0. The High Point
Panthers are 1-1 in conference
action and 5-2 overall.
Guilford is coming off its
best performance of the season
as they easily captured the
Randolph-Macon Invitational
Basketball Tournament
championship over the week
end. The Quakers, paced by
Tournament Most Valuable
Player Gary Devlin, posted
consecutive victories over
Hampden Sydney, 99-67, and
Randolph-Macon, 82-62, to
capture their second Tourna
ment this year.
In the Randolph-Macon
contest, the Quakers con
verted a close game into a
rout. With Randolph-Macon
in the lead, 62-60, with
4:30 left in the game, Guilford
took control. Led by play
maker Devlin, the Quakers
scored 22 straight points.
Devlin pumped in 23
points, eight coming in the 22
point stretch. Forward Elton
Co-Captains Selected
Ed Alonge, a sophomore
from Lynbrook, N.Y., and
Bob Lloyd, a sophomore
from Trenton, N.J., have been
elected soccer captains for
the 1978 Guilford College
soccer team.
Alonge, a two-year starter
at midfield, anchored the
Quaker defense this past
season and served as
co-captain along with senior
Steve Hicks.
Lloyd, the leading scorer for
the Quakers this year with 17
goals, is a graduate of Hamilton
High School in Trenton, and
has been a two-year starter
for the Quakers at left wing.
As a freshman Lloyd scored
16 goals to give him a two
year total of 33.
"We feel that both Ed and
Bob will give us excellent
leadership next year,"
commented Quaker coach Ray
Alley. "Both will be juniors
on a team that has a strong
junior class. Ed showed good
leadership this season, and
Bob has certainly been a
leader on the field."
Both Alonge and Lloyd
captained their teams to out
standing seasons in their
senior years of High School.
Alonge was a standout at
Lynbrook High School on
Long Island.
Gross also played a fine game,
scoring 22 points. Gross, as
well as Devlin, was named to
the All-Tournament team.
In the win over Hampden-
Sydney Friday night, Guilford
toyed with the opposition
before exploding with the
21 consecutive points like in
the game. With 12 minutes
remaining, the Quakers led by
only eight points, 60-57.
Center Bill Meyler then
connected with a jumper which
began a Guilford surge that
ended with the Quakers leading
81-52.
Forward Mike Clerry
dominated the boards grabbing
12 rebounds as well as
scoring 14 points. Devlin,
netted 20 points and Gross
and Meyler had 16 points a
piece.
The tournament victory
gives Guilford a string of
six wins. Since the Quakers
only loss to Milligan,
Guilford has victimized Liberty
Baptist, Pfeifer, and Catawba.
The six consecutive wins
have been a result of improved
defense. This is shown by
Guilford's tight defensive play
in the Hampden Sydney
contest as well as the Randolph-
Macon.
Bob Lloyd and Ed Alonge,
who led Guilford College to a
fine 14-6-2 soccer season
which included the NAIA
District 26 championship,
have been named to the
Greensboro Daily News All-
State Soccer team. Lloyd,
a sophomore from Trenton,
N.J., was the team's leading
scorer with 17 goals and
eight assists, while Alonge,
a sophomore from Lynbrook,
N.Y., anchored the Quaker
defense at middle back.
Two other Quakers, junior
winger Bob Propster of
Chapel Hill, and sophomore
goal keeper Bob Sanguinetti
from Trenton, N.J., were
named Honorable Mention
All-State. Propster, playing
hi second season for the
Quakers after transferring
from the University of North
Carolina, scored 16 goals to
run his two-year total to 45,
/ while Sanguinetti was credited
with seven shutouts during
the season.
Eleven different colleges
and universities were repre
sented in the all-state selec
tions with Guilford being
one of only three to have
two players picked to the 14-
man squad.

Intramural
Wrap-Up
Last Wednesday, in the rain
and mud, the Intramural
Soccer finalists were deter
mined. In two exciting games,
the players had a blast slosh
ing through the mud. The
first game between Bryan and
Milner 3rd ended in an 0-0
tie at the end of regulation
time. In overtime Milner 3rd
won as the ball "floated" past
Bryan's goalie. The second
game was between Milner Ist
N and English/George White.
This game also went into
overtime. At the end of the
overtime period, the score
remained 1-1. In the penalty
kicks, Todd Hershey scored
for Milner Ist N a 2-1 victory.
The goal was only one of
many this season for Todd.

The Quakers led the entire
game, at one time holding a
28-point lead over the Tarheels.
