On Saturday, April 12, the
Guilford College Student Union
presents a concert featuring
Papa John Creach. Nearly sixty
five years old, Creach has
played all musical styles. And in
the past decade, Creach has
distinguished himself as a rock
er, gigging with Hot Tuna and
Jefferson Starship, and playing
with the Jefferson Airplane for
a few years.
Yet Papa John did not estab
lish himself as the "Rock Fath
er" until he was into his fifties.
He's a man of incredible ener
gy, and proved that by jamming
with a level of intensity that
helped the psychedelic sound of
the Airplane soar. Creach once
said "create more push. Always
push, and once you create one
good lick, then you try to top
that."
Since leaving the Airplane
and assorted other related San
Francisco projects, Creach has
recorded five solo albums in a
more personal idiom. Continu
ing in the laid back Bay Area
style, Creach has incorporated
his jazz and R&B roots into his
solo work.
Creach continues to amaze
the music world with his ama
zing vitality while maintaining
his musical finesse. So, be
prepared to celebrate Spring,
and boogie to Papa John Creach
Saturday, "somewhere over the
rainbow." The concert, spon
sored by the College Union, will
be on the Bryan-Milner lawn at
8 p.m., and admission is free.

Happy Easter!
April 8, 1980
By Bill Peterson
One of life's many pleasures
is the flowing sound of a band
that works well together, and
the Jimmy Persons Quintet
works together extremely well.
One reason for their tremen
dous ability to please an aud
ience with their clean sound
may be found in the way this
group was formed
Soon after Jimmy Persons
(vocals and guitar) and Charles
Carlton (lead and rhythm) star
ted playing together, Cirk Gill
(bass), Talib Din (keyboards)
and Larry Clay (drums) joined
the band because they liked the
sound, and not because they
were recruited to play pre
arranged music.
Another reason they come
across so well is that this
flexible group feels out the
audience with several different
varieties of music. Once they
find out what style of music the
particular group enjoys the
most, the band plays it, and
plays it well.
Gill has released a disco tune,
"Turn This Disco Out," and the
band plans to release "Have a
Little Faith in Me" in a differ
ent vein in the next few months.
Yet when one tries to label their
style, problems arise.
Person uses labels such as
"jazz" or "top 40 flavor," but
prefers "variety." Carlton is
quick to point out just how hard
it is to label any type of music
within the elusive boundaries of
definitions which constantly
change in connotation.
