G uiilfo r dian Volume LXIV, No. 23 1 t BUM vl The gym has progressed since this picture of the solar panels was taken, but who gets to use it when it's done is still a matter of concern. Non-nuclear world Thousands of Americans from all walks of life will join together on April 26 for a march and rally in Washington, DC. Environmentalists, consumer advocates, senior citizens, stu dents, labor groups, peace acti vists, Native American groups and others will rally for a nonnuclear world at 1:00 p.m. at the Washington Monument. Members of the North Caro lina Public Interest Research Group (NC PIRG) from Guil ford College and other colleges in North Carolina will give their support to the Coalition for a Non-Nuclear World (the um brella organization which is sponsoring the events). Six buses will be leaving from Durham early Saturday morn ing and will return that evening after the rally. In Greensboro, carpools are currently being arranged to leave both Friday night and Saturday morning. According to Art Don sky, staffperson for NC PIRG, "This event, which also features a night-long vigil surrounding the White House Friday night, will mark the bringing together of Americans from many diverse groups, from coal miners to college students, for a common purpose -- a non-nuclear world." The goals of the Coali tion include: no nuclear power, safe energy, full employment, no nuclear weapons, and honor Native American treaties. Some of the featured spea kers and musicians for Satur day's rally include: author and safe energy activist Barry Com moner, DC City Councilwoman Hilda Mason, Rep. Ron Del lums of California, physician Dr Helen Caldicott, and a MUSE Review (Musicians Uni ted for Safe Energy) including Graham Nash, John Hall, Bon nie Raitt, Sweet Honey and the Rock, and much more. The position is needed due to the complexity of utilizing the gym's four playing floors, swimming pool, and diving tank in conjunction with the Guil ford College VMCA. The "Y" has a lease agree ment with the school entitling them to rent space in the Physical Education Center for their activities. Rental pay ments made to the college will be based on the amount of time and space the YMCA uses. According to the College's k ; ,■ * Rain can't stop everything, so Serendipity turned out to be mediocre for some, and a blast for others. See pages 4-7 for the complete picture. Business Manager, Jim Newlin, "the key to success of this program is scheduling." All activities in the Physical Educa tion Center will be dictated by agenda However, there will be blocks of time designated for "free play" in specific areas of the gym. Acknowledging that this pol icy sounds restrictive, Newlin added that "we will be at least twice better off" because the new gym will give us 300% more space." A compromised scheduling calendar has been worked out to satisfy the needs of both par ties. This calendar divides the year into three sections: aca demic year, breaks within the academic year, and summer months. For example, during the aca Serendipity Photos see pages 4-7 April 16, 1980 demic year, Guilford College will use the main floor 75% of the time, whereas swimming time will be split 50/50. During the summer months, the YMCA will use both the main floor and pool 75% of the time. The college couldn't justify the pool's expense itself, but New!in said "it is the core of the "V" program and therefore they will use it more " Some of the gym's facilities will be used everyday by the YMCA, but it is "clear that the college has the priority in scheduling," according to New lin. A steering committee com posed of representatives from Guilford College and the YMCA will also be formed to aid the director in handling "any prob lems that may crop up."
