Editorial Carter's reality: more than a concept As the presidential cam paigns wind down, one thing is regrettably clear it's going to be close. The winner will be either Reagan or Carter, which is too bad because Anderson is truly impressive. But the reality is that the choice that makes a difference is the choice between Reagan and Carter. And the difference is significant. Reagan offers a dangerously simplified world view that as serts that there is no energy crisis, that we do not need to conserve, and that we can increase military spending, cut taxes eventually, and balance the budget. The panacea is comforting to those buffeted by modern complexities who seek nostalgic reassurances. But, as the ERA issue points out, times have changed. "Happily ever after" is a lovely ending for fairy tales, but it is not a sufficient premise on which to base governmental policies. Reagan is also naive on foreign policy issues. His stand on arms control lacks sub stance. And his intimations of intervention smack of brinks manship. In a volatile inter national setting, one should certainly be wary of such rash attitudes. Carter's alternative view is more realistic. It is not as realistic as Anderson's, but it is not as unpopular as Anderson's either (which does count for something in a popular elec tion). Carter is not without his problems. Domestically, his supplort of minorities is not as strong as it should have been, and he has not developed a cooperative relationship with Congress. He has also not The Todd Hobin Band will be performing Thursday, Nov 13 at 8:00 p.m. in Dana Auditor ium. Given that decline, any politician that must have a broad constituency cannot be a hold-out on the left. Moderation is not always the best, but it is sometimes the best we can do or expect. The other, more fundamental factor that confounds Carter is somethng that Carter (or any other politician) cannot publicly admit -- much goes on that is out of his control. Further, much would be beyond any one's control. The hostage crisis and the drastic increase in oil prices are examples. We are no longer the uniquely powerful country that holds all the trump cards. Wheeling and dealing is the best we will be able to do. Inflation is too high, but who could do better given the sky rocketing energy costs that OPEC has demanded. Carter is thoughtful. Con sidering the risks of ill considered decisiveness, that is important. Carter does pay close attention to detail and to information. He leads with a cognizance of his environment. Reagan, on the other hand, can't get his facts right and changes them frequently. He believes in the Invisible Hand and other outdated myths. We need something more consis tent than the image of a strong leader of a weak government that tries to stay out of people's lives. Carter offers something bet ter. He may be a compromise, or he just may be the best person for a position of which we expect far too much. intelligent, satisfying and excel lently played." Powerful and melodic rock ers, Todd's style is vocal and tasty, yet lacks nothing in dynamic rock 'n roll. Art series presents Harry' Walk into Dana Auditorium on Friday night, November 7 at 8:15 p.m. What is this, a dance company called "Harry"? Who is Harry? There's nobody named Harry in the dance troupe And what can she possibly be doing up there? And why should anybody want to do anything like that? The performance, free to Guilford College students and staff, is a presentation of "Harry: Dance and Other Works by Senta Driver." Senta Driver is one of the most provocative dancer/choreogra phers in the modern dance scene today, and her company of four dancers perform dances rather unlike any you will have seen before. "Harry" is "like a troupe of koala bears moving at high-speed," favoring roly-poly movement and scaling one another indiscriminately like trees. A signature of Senta Driver's works is a preoccupation with weight, a concern shared by many pioneers of modern dance, but an element that has all but vanished in much con temporary modern dance. In Harry, dancers support one another in a variety of ways as they move. They stand on one another, slam into one another, slam into the floor. Dancers seem to be testing their sta mina, virtuosity, or the extent to which they expose their guts to the audience. Frequently they display great bursts of hyper activity and determination, but not an ounce of decorativeness or illusion to cover them up. Vou can understand why Senta says of herself, "Marathon running has created an atmo sphere in which my work should flourish." It has to do, she says, with finding out what the body 1 Contact Lenses 79 s5 Includes fitting, training, starter kit and fol!ow-up visits PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE ▼F •W EVE EXAMINATION. She's inter ested in violence - not in the sense of brutality or sadism, but as in the violent expenditure of energy, even to the breaking point. Despite the physical nature of Driver's dance pieces, a sur prising element that breaks through and continuously re surfaces is the wit and humor of it. Sometimes it is the slapstick wit of bodies colliding, some times the sly wit of the incon gruous or offbeat gesture. Dan cers reverse traditional sex roles: women partner men or hold them aloft; Senta is rotated on the pivot of her head; a dancer dances en pointe bare foot. The reviewer for Dance magazine proclaims that "Dri ver is one of the least predict able, most witty and whacky of the newest generation of cho reographers. Hand in hand with wit is Senta's keen intelligence Clearly she is a minimalist, a conceptual artist But she is also Page three terribly concerned with the history of dance, where it came from, what are the rudimentary basics of movement, of weight, of rhythm Sounds, speech and song, injected by the dancers, are sometimes incorporated into a particular piece. Senta is concerned with the dancer and choreographer as thinkers, and with dance as it incorporates and exemplifies the process of thinking The program on Friday night will be the opening event of Parents Weekend, and it will consist of up to seven works from the current repertoire of "Harry", to be selected by Senta Driver Admission is free to Guilford College sutdents, faculty and staff Admission for the general public is $2 for students and senior citizens, and $4 for other adults.
