In addition to the Homecoming and City Stage events, a most "far-out" event of the past week was the
dedication of the Three College Observatory. Students from Guilford, North Carolina A & T University, and
UNC-G co-operators of the observatory, are now able to use the largest telescope in the state for viewing
planets, binary star systems and other heavenly bodies. Guilford's very own theoretical astronomer
Sheridan Simon was instrumental in the formulation of the proposal which landed the $236,200 grant from
the Comprehensive Assistance to Undergraduate Science Education Division of the National Science foun
dation.

Keep these tips from the Rape Action Preven
tion and Education Center, Inc. handy.
Walking:
1. Always be alert to what is going on around
you.
2. Don't look passive; walk briskly and con
fidently.
3. Try to walk with friends when possible.
4. Try to keep your hands free-most men do.
5. Be suspicious of men who offer to protect
you from other men; attackers often work in
pairs.
6. If followed, cross the street (walk in mid
dle if late) staying near street lights; yell
"Fire" and go to nearest lighted place.
7. If you must run, also yell; attract as much
attention as possible.
Driving:
1. Always keep car doors locked.
24 tips to guard yourself from rape
2. Check backseats even if you locked your
car.
3. Roll windows down only part way.
4. Keep your gas tank at least Vi full; carry
enough money for other transportation, and
always have change for a phone call.
5. If your car breaks down, raise hood, then
wait inside. If someone stops to help, ask
through a slightly opened window to have a
repair truck sent.
6. If followed, drive to a safe place (police
station, public building) and honk the horn.
7. Try to park in well-lighted areas and well
traveled areas...never park where you
wouldn't want to walk!
8. Have car keys ready before you need them.
9. If someone tries to enter your car at an in
tersection, blow horn. If they do get in, take
keys and get out; if you cannot get out, try to
throw keys out window.
General:
1. Don't hitch-hike ; if you do, don't get in with
more than one man, or with someone who
goes out of his way to pick you up (U-turns).
