By Paige Hogan At 6:15 on Wednesday afternoon, the last of the 371 votes were counted and the ticket of Roy Porter, Karen Oppelt and Teresa Calio was elected as next year's Union Executive Board. Porter-who will serve as president-listed meeting with old officers in order to discuss budgets, new committee chairpersons, etc. as the board's first priori ty. This objective was closely followed by initiating student en thusiasm and educating the students to the importance of the Union. "The main thing that I want is justice. I want the students to be heard. I want to give them what they want such as a choice in concerts, more pleasing dances, ..." Porter feels that in the past, too many of the decisions have been made by committees. He wants to involve "the whole student body as opposed to select groups", adding that their ticket feels there should be more unity of the school as a whole under the union. "We have all the resources ready, we just need to gather them up and put them under one scope." However, Porter also heavily stressed that the stu dent apathy must be conquered even if it takes "knocking on doors, rallying in the hallways or putting up provocative signs." "I want the students to know that the Union should represent them and that they should be more involved." Karen Oppelt, who will serve as vice president, also made comment on the student body's unwillingness to become involved. "There definitely needs to be more student involvement. The election shows that; less than half the students voted. That shows something is wrong." Porter feels that the three officers will be able to work well together as the executive board. Teresa Calio, who will serve as treasurer, car ried this same sentiment. "We worked together on the film committee and we thought alike. I think this will make us more cohesive in work ing on the Union." Next year's executive board, as a whole, wants to initiate "new areas" and change such as altering the election procedures by making the open forums a larger part of the election. Porter commented however, that they "realize they can't do everything in one year." "As many changes as possible" was also the platform for the defeated ticket of Eric Zilling, Stacie Poulos and Charlie Hill, accor ding to Zilling. "I'm not really upset that Roy won. He's a great guy and he will do a good job. "However, "He'll have a different type of union than we would have had. Their tentative plans included smaller but more numerous concerts, with perhaps an outdoor concert in the fall; dances featuring rock 'n roll and punk bands, trying to get a T.V. in the grill room, student body meetings in order to get input on various issues and "as much as the Union could, to revise the alcohol policy." Zilling also felt that there should be more than one day bet ween the deadline for tickets to enter the running and the election itself.
