Commentary From The Editor One of the finest points of the Guilford College community is that we can come together and pool our resources to solve extremely difficult and sensitive problems. Guilford's recent decision to divest from South Africa is the product of just such a process. The same spirit of cooperation is evident in the recent proposal put forth by the Student Af fairs Committee at the se cond Alcohol Forum. It reflects careful considera tion of students, faculty, and administrative con cerns. The proposal (detailed on pg.l) recognizes the freedom of those 21 and over, even though they are a student body minority, to drink alcohol, and at the same time it serves as a reasonable effort to uphold N.C. law. The new guidelines will be tried out at the Oct. 31 Halloween quad dance. That dance will be an im portant test of student in itiative and cooperation. If all goes well, drinking privileges could be extend ed to lawn dances and also to Serendipity events. If not, it is certain that this current fairly lenient policy will be abandoned in favor of a more str ingent one. This new proposal deserves observance and support. It is possible that the N.C. drinking age will be lowered in the next few years, but until that hap pens, Guilford and every other higher institution of learning face tough policy decisions. If you ask me why, I can tell you that it is only the feeling of challenge that has made us do the things that we have done. In my opinion, Chemistry is one of the most challenging sciences that exists, because you never know what can hap pen. It is obvious that you can prevent certain things, but others are only surprises of nature. The risk in the Chemistry lab can be only managed by the students. The safety rules and the procedures are given by the teacher every time, and it is up to the student how he 38 God of love 39 Japanese outcast 41 Country of Europe 42 Alcoholic beverage 43 Pointless 45 Metric measure 46 Exists 47 Those bound to drug habit 49 Hypothetical force 50 Sewing implement 52 Diners 54 Guide 55 Pretends DOWN 1 Wing-footed 2 Faeroe Islands whirlwind 3 Knock manages the experiment. In my last article many things were misinter preted because the article had suffered editing at the Guilfordian. The major thing was the change of it's title, which gave it a sensationalist character: from "The Chemistry Laboratories" to "Chemistry Laboratories Dangerous." The reader by his first impression will think of explosions and ter rifying experiments. In addition there was the sub traction of the last paragraph which gave the reader the focus of the ar ticle. With other minor things, the readers had to focus their attention on minor points in the article The Weekly Crossword Puzzle 4 Former Russian ruler 5 Eagles' nests 6 Sounded a horn which were not what I meant. It was not my in tention to give that drastic point of view that is not completely true. Once again, Chemistry is dangerous and the person that wants to learn Chemistry has to know that. It doesn't matter what safety rules we follow; there will always be the possibility an acci dent. My point was that the laboratories are in bad shape. They need im mediate attention from the college administration. This issue should be a con cern for everyone who uses the labs.
