Sports Guilford Football Ends 2-8 Season by John Lilly Guilford College head football coach Charles Forbes "couldn't fault the effort" of his team as the Quakers completed a disappointing 2-8 season with a 56-13 loss to the Elon Fightin' Christians. The November 14th game at Armfield Athletic Center saw the end of the college careers of eight seniors, among them quarterback Jeff Schreiber, quarter back/punter Donnie Red mon, kicker Rick Herring, running back Wayne Shepherd, offensive linemen Marc Scott and Kamus McNair, linebacker Charles Arr ington, and defensive back Todd Kreuter. Despite Guilford's losing record, which broke a str ing of seven consecutive non-losing seasons, several Quakers had good seasons and the team's youth would seem to in dicate that the future is bright. On offense, Schreiber completed nearly 47% of his passes for 1,154 yards. Junior Cedric Ellison pac ed the ground attack with 595 yards and five touchdowns. Shepherd was injured for much of the season, but finished his career by running for 206 JSHP9P'^& ?jb ; IB' ■ *~-*.- Hr W ■ "**"■''**' i 'i . . .• . ... |^ III ,BIJM^i>WmB[ Brad France gains yardage. This group was led in 1987 by right end Rick Nichols, who caught 23 passes. Justin Skwara had 19 receptions, and Greg Despres and Frank Granack caught 13 and 12 passes, respectively. The offensive line will miss Scott and McNair who paved the way for many of Guilford's 2,842 net yards in 1987. On defense, the good news is that Guilford will have ten of its eleven starters back in 1988. The bad news is that the one 1987 starter who will not be Jt>ack is Charles Arr ington. He led the team in total tackles, making 43 solos and assisting on 47 more, and he was also first in sacks (6) and fumble recoveries (3). Another linebacker, Daniel Cole, had 48 solo tackles, 29 assists and 3 sacks. On the defensive line, Scott Biesecker, David Harlowe a id Brad Gwinn were all nt v to their posi tions, but ei ch showed im provement as the season progressed The defensive backfield was led bv cornerbacks Mike Thomas and Mike Green. Thomas in tercepted one pass and broke up seven others, while Green broke up five passes and recovered two fumbles. The Quakers must find replacements for punter Redmon and kicker Herr ing. Redmon averaged 35.6 yards per punt. Herr ing scored 43 points and made seven total tackles on the kick-off team. Many of these stand-out performances did not go unnoticed, as indicated by the fact that Guilford plac ed six players on the 1987 NAIA All-District 26 Foot ball Team.
