Serendipity Plans Under Way
by Jay Underwood
Plans for Serendipity,
Guilford College's annual springtime
mega-bash, are falling swiftly into
place, say College Union officials.
The gala, which will kick
off on April 7 and continue through
April 9, "promises to be the best ever.
There's going to be a litde something
for everyone, along with a touch of
the unexpected," said Bill S toe sen,
vice-president of the College Union
and co-chair of the Serendipity
Committee.
Two bands have already
been booked, with an estimate of
eight more to go, all with "a tremen
dous variety of styles that is sure to
move the diversity of the Guilford
.crowd," Stoesen said.
"The New Potato Ca
iboose," which played at Serendipity
]last year to a highly enthusiastic
(Crowd, will be playing on Friday
,night at dusk. Their show is described
]by Stoesen as "a sociological ex
itravaganza—they're a proven crowd
(pleaser. There's no doubt that this is
ithe best band to kick off a wild week
-end."
"The Maxx," a top 40/ funk
Iband which also played at Guilford
]last semester to high acclaim, will be

The budget for Serendip

Stoesen indicated that these forums
often suffered low student turnout,
he said that many constructive con

He said that there will be
more forums, but the dates have not

Cable T. V. is coming to
Guilco! Yes, we students will then
have access to the "vast wasteland"
and then some!
Cablevision was installed
in Founders Hall last year, prompt
ing students to push forcable acess in
residence halls as well.Heinous (and
untrue) rumors were spread of in
stallation over spring break; of course,
we returned to the same three chan
nels that we left there.
But now, there is light at
the end of the "President Bush -is
on-every-channel" tunnel, Ca
blevision workers are expected to
begin installing underground cable
lines in every residence hall on Feb
ruary Ist. Mr. Wesley Bennett of
Cablevision estimates that the proc
ess of installation will take four to
five working days, depending on

We Want to
Know
The life and breath of a
newspaper depends upon its readers.
Without constant communiction and
comments passing back and forth, a
paper loses its vitality and its right to
inform.
Now in its second semes
ter of once-a-week publication, the
Guilfordian is seeking feedback from
eveiyone who picks up the paper on
Monday mom ing and reads it.
How do you like our con
tent? Layout? Typefaces? Anything
.hat comes to your mind is a concern
for the Guilfordian. Are there too
many or too few pages, is it too con
servative, not controversial enough,
or does it poke its nose where it
doesn't belong?
We will compile and pub
weather conditions and availability
of cable crews.
The gap between last year's
request for cable and this year's in
stallation was filled by delays of all
shapes and sizes.
The major problem was the
location of the cable lines: future
installation of telephone and power
lines and connections with the future
Communications Building had to be
taken into consideration. In addition,
the college prefers that all lines be
buried underground rather than hang
ing on the ex-terior of buildings, so
there was a need for technical plan
ning.
Cablevision required
Guilford to have all this planning
done before they would make the
college first priority on the installa
tion list. Steve Luber, Guilford's
Director of Facilities Management,
established contact with the cable
company as early as September 1988;
it has taken Guilford that long to rise
to the top of the priority list.

At a meeting on January
24, Cablevision and Guilford set the
date of February Ist for the work to
begin.
For now, cable T.V. will
only be available in residence hall
lounges and the apartments usually
occupied by head residents. The long
term plan is to make cable available
in each individual room; however,
that will require more cable lines,
and hence more planning.
Also, pay T.V. channels
such as HBO are not included in the
initial installation. Cablevision will
have to decide whether the residence
halls are public or private buildings.
If they are considered public, no pay
stations can be installed. The resi
dence halls will also have to decide
who will bear the cost of such addi
tions.
Lubcr feels that cable is "a
good move for the school, a good
move for the housing department."
