We are, after all, here to respond to the needs of the students. And sometimes it helps to set straight some misinforma tion that in an emergency could cause problems or even harm. None of us wants that. Coverage for health service is pro vided for students during non-office hours according to procedures that have been used for many years at Guilford. Any problem that cannot be handled Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is not ignored but referred to a varied network of alternatives from emergency first aid to hospitalization. R. A.sand campus security personnel are well-versed in the procedures and should be contacted as judgement warrants. This system has worked very well for us and is supported by our staff physicians as well as the college administration. It is surprising to read that students might be told by trusted members of the community that they should not get sick except at certain times because they can not get help otherwise. It's not true. It's not informed. And it is dangerous, be cause a student might need help but think it's not available. If you have an emergency at any time, we can and will help through our cover age for such times. If you are injured in chemistry lab we are even there, through the first aid supplies we provide gratis to the Chemistry Department If any read ers have any questions or would like to offer constructive suggestions, they are welcome to stop by for a visit Charlotte Schmickle, R.N. Director, Student Health Service Boredom a cause of drinking To the Editor: I would like to thank Jacob Stohler for responding to a statement I made in the August 28 edition of The Guilfordian re garding the use of alcohol on this campus. There are numerous reasons typically given for drinking alcoholic beverages. Last spring the Piedmont Independent College Associate conducted a survey on this and other campuses on the use of alcohol and other drugs by college stu dents. Boredom was listed by a number of students in answering the question, "Why do you choose to drink alcoholic bever ages?" If we can assume that these responses are accurate, Guilford must take seriously the implication that we are not doing enough to create a vibrant environment for its student body. Many initiatives are underway this year to address this issue. Senate, SRC, Student Activities, the Stu dent Development staff and many others are developing programs and activities which will meet the need for involvement Our efforts in the residence halls this year will join with many other groups and organizations on campus to eliminate boredom and to more fully engage stu dents into the life of the college. Richard Ford Director of Residential Life End sexist language To the Editor: A walk in Guilford's woods >- continued from page 2 Humans have a great advantage over trees because we are able to change our envi ronment instead of having to adapt to it. When we object to the weather, we build shelters with heat and air conditioning. When we grow tired of the water Mother Earth supplies, we make factories to pro duce Coke and Pepsi. The list of human encroachment on nature is endless, and in many cases can not be helped. Just remember when walk ing through Guilford's woods, to have respect for your elders, the trees. Look, smell, touch, listen, but do not leave any remnants of human life other than your I was pleased that the Guilfordian staff chose to inform students about the divi sion of Anne Ponder's IDS, Honors, and academic advising responsibilities. I was disturbed, however, by a quote attributed to me which used "he" when referring to all Guilford students. As students in my classes can attest, I am very careful in my speech and writing to use inclusive lan guage (she/he, him/her, etc.). Although this point may seem trivial to many, the implications of using the generic "he" have been studied in psychology with the results consistently showing that people think of or image males when "he" is used as a generic term. I remember thinking during my interview with Betsy Vance that my use of "she/he" and "him/her" might sound awkward but that the prin ciple was important enough to demand such language. Perhaps, Betsy did not "hear" my inclusive language or thought it more correct to use the more generally accepted generic he. Regardless of the reason, "he" excludes females who make up approximately half of our student population and such terminology perpetu ates a masculine standard in our language. I would encourage all writers for The Guilfordian and, indeed, the Guilford community to become more aware of their use of noninclusive language and its im plied meaning. Kathy Adams Coordinator of Academic Advising Thanks for spirit To the Editor: After experiencing my first football game at Guilford it seems appropriate to kudoize some VIPs. THE GUILFORDIAN September 18,1989 footprints. For some of us, nature is a. close to God as we can get. Corrections In the Sept 11 issue, we misspelled Angie Durocher's name in the women's soccer article. In the Sept 11 issue we also attrib uted the photo of Almost Midnight Bowling to Andrew Smith. Rich "Montgomery took the picture. An drew Smith took the photo of David Bamhill. So our "hats off' to: • That great Kazoo marching band! • The cheerleaders who never quit! • Scott Huger now he's got spirit! • The Spirit of Guilford you're su per! • The residence halls, great signs and participation! • The new mascot Quake how special! • Roger Johnson, our volunteer cheer leading coach enthusiasm! • The football team great spirit, de termination, fun to watch. All Guilford College students at the game—your enthusiasm and participa tion was great. What I observed Saturday was excit ing and to think we've only just begun!
