Wesleyan, Coach Jerry Cornwell said, "We did a good job defensively and that let us get some easy bas kets." Because of their defensive surge, the Quakers could "give some people some rest and have fresh people in all of the time." Gold and Taylor teamed for 44 points and 19 rebounds. Helton and senior Co-Captain Kelly Bailey combined for 15 assists. Comwell stressed, "We want to press and try to wear [Belmont Abbey] down because we have depth advantage." G uilford couldn't capitalize on this advantage as India Adams and the rest of the Crusaders bolted to a 42-20 halftime lead. Gold surprisingly fouled out early in the second half with just 2 points after averaging 2 fouls per game previously. Helton tallied 23 points as Taylor scored 19 and pulled down 10 boards. Bailey and sophomore Laura Klingseisen had three steals apiece for the stunned Quaker squad as Abbey pushed its rec ord to 21-0 (10-0). Guilford went to St. Andrew's Saturday and travel to Pfeiffer Wednesday in two "must" games. Though the roster only allows 25 players on the team, 31 men are currently practicing. "We've got several positions that are up for grabs," said Ful ton. "I don't know who's going to play where yet. "We can look forward to some of the new faces having an im pact on the infield," Fulton con tinued. "Those are Jeff Petty, Scott Stier, Scott Cates, Chan Whitson and Jerry Marshall. You have to be strong up the middle, the key defensive positions. If In next week's Guilfordian, a composite look at the 'Bos ~ •• ■ • . Kelly Bally brings the ball upcourt against Wesleyan. we get people to fill these posi tions, we'll have a chance to get a little bit better." With the change to the NCAA, the baseball team is adjusting their schedule accordingly. "We'll be play ing more NCAA teams, which means we're miss ing some of the teams we've played in the past," said Fulton. This gives us potential if we execute... if you don't perform, you don't get positive results. "I have raised my level of expectations for my players this year," said Fulton. "If they're willing to do what I ask them to do, we'll have success in itself. Success doesn't have to be meas ured in wins and losses, but in the players' ability to perform." The first game of the season is Thursday, March 1, at Hampden- Sydney at 3 p.m. The first home game is Sun day, March 4, against Shenan doah at 2 p.m. That will be the first chance for the campus spec tators to come and root for the home team. "He is a tough player with a heart that is bigger than his body," Jensen continued. "He doesn't want us to lose." Prospects for the post season are next to nothing for the Quakers this year. "As they say at the end of baseball or football season, we have a mathematical chance," said Jensen. "But it doesn't look like we will go." Next week, Guilford hosts Pfeiffer on Wednesday and Newport News Apprentice on Saturday. The Quakers lost to Pfeif fer 68-64 on January 15. "Pfeiffer has the best per sonnel in the Carolinas Con ference," said Jensen. "The have last year's Rookie of the Year, the leading re bounder and another all-star player. Those three are very talented but they also have four or five good players." Jensen does not think that playing Newport News af ter playing them last week will hurt the Quakers. "It's just a game we have to play in order to fulfill our Division 111 requirements," said Jensen. Jensen has not seemed too happy his team this season. But he has still hoped for the best "I hope the students will see us in the next five home games play a little better," said Jensen. "Let's hope we play up to our capabilities."
