THE GUILFORDIAN
Concert Review: Toad
Matt Busch
Guest Writer
"If you're dancing and listening more
power to you," Glen Phillips, singer of the
alternative rock quartet Toad the Wet
Sprocket, after the performance of the
song "Hold Her Down."
The band, consisting of bassist Dean
Dinning, drummer Randy Guss, lead gui
tarist Todd Nichols, and singer/guitarist
Glen Phillips, performed at Baity's Music
Garden in Winston Salem last Saturday
night.
Following the song "Hold Her Down,"
which deals with the subject of rape,
Phillips said he used to not like people
dancing to the song, but then he realized
they might be listening as well.
The band put on a very memorable
show opening with "Walk on the Ocean"
from their new album "Fear."
They performed most of the songs from
"Fear" as well as songs from their previ
ous albums "Pale" and "Bread and Cir
cuses."

Some of their highlight songs were: "Hold
Her Down," "I Will Not Take These Things
ForGranted,""OneLittleGirl,"and"Don't
Go Away."
The band played one new song that is not
on any of their three albums. They did not
give a title.
During the song "Nothing is Alone,"
Nichols went to lead vocals, while Dinning
played keyboards and Phillips, bass.
The show ended with "Know Me," which
included and intro from a Waterboy's song.
After that the band returned to do an
encore at the end of which Phillips, stand
ing barefoot and sporting his new buzz
haircut, smiled and said, "Rock and roll is
a silly thing isn't it?"
Returning for a second encore, Toad
played half of a hammed-up version of AC/
DC's"Back in Black." They then ended the
show with "I Will Not Take These Things
for Granted."
As the band left the stage, Phillips
summed up the evening saying "Be Good
to Each Other."

From its opening moments, "Cape Fear"
becomes a chariot ride into Hell. Martin
Scorsese, the director, does not hesitate to
build the tension and suspense; instead, he
escalates it with a surgeon's precision. This
is, of course, if you can forget for a moment
that you are in a theatre, and that everything
(as it always does in Hollywood) will end
happily. Fortunately, Scorsese makes this
easy to do.
Riding the coat-tails of Goodfellas,
Scorsese once again hooks up with Robert
De Niro to bring back to the screen one of the
greatest director/actor combinations in Hol
lywood history.
One of the hardest things to do success
fully in movies is to make a good remake:
the director, producers, and actors have the

original movie hanging over their shoul
ders. Scorsese tackled the problem of the
remake well. He cast Gregory Peck and
Robert Mitchum in minor roles. In the
original, Mitchum was the evil ex-con who
harasses his old lawyer, played by Peck.
It was interesting to see how well De Niro
played the villian. It has been several years
since I have seen a performance by De Niro
like this one, filled with calm malevolence,
rage and intense emotion. I could not imag
ine anyone playing the role better. Is there
anything this man cannot do?
Nick Nolte, who played the lawyer, was
very convincing, as was Jessica Lange, who
played his wife. The truth is, everything
about this movie (except for a few slightly
unrealistic scenes) was excellent. To sum it
up: Cape Fear is very much a What About
Bob? gone psychotic.
