16 THE GUILFORDIAN Lady Quakers drop two A 9-2 streak since the holiday break for the Guilford College women's bas ketball team hit a couple of bumps as the Quakers dropped two games last week. On Tuesday (February 11), the Quak ers lost a non-conference matchup to Greensboro College 74-62. Returning to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Saturday (February 15), Emory & Henry College beat Guilford 68-55 in Emory, Virginia. The Quakers are now 13-9 overall, 9- 3 in the ODAC. Beating a team twice in one season is never easy, as the Quakers found out against Greensboro. Guilford beat the Hornets on two last-second free throws on December 10, and Greensboro came into Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse on Tues day with revenge on its mind and a hot shooting hand. SPORTS Men split over weekend James Clark Staff Writer Paul Ferrell scored 13 of Guilford's last 20 points, as the Quakers finished the game with a five-minute scoring flurry and coasted to a 78-58 victory over Randolph Macon. With Guilford leading by 8 points and only 5 minutes remaining, Randolph Macon was forced to abandon its low-pressure de fense in an attempt to create turnovers. The result was disastorous. The Quakers uti lized their superior quickness and opened up a 20 point lead before the game was over. "Randolph Macon is a team that doesn't make many mistakes," said Jensen, "but they also don't have much team speed and we were able to capitalize on that down the stretch. Anytime you beat a team like Randolph Macon by 20 points you know you've played well." Jensen was especially pleased with the performances of Ferrell, who scored 24 points and Michael Wright, who scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. "I am amazed that Paul could contribute so much when he wasn't even expecting to play," said Jensen. "He's a tough kid." "Mike was able to cover their 6'B" center, who is their best player, all game—and he's only 6'3". We like to put Mike against the other team's best big man and he certainly answered the challenge." Guilford sealed the victory from the line, shooting 71 percent down the stretch. • • • David Cohen —who only scored four points all game—made the big play when it counted as Virginia Wesleyan beatGuilford 71-69. With only five seconds remaining and the score tied at 69, the Quakers had the ball and tried to set up a last second shot. Unfortu nately Cohen anticipated Guilford's plan, stole the ball at half court, and drove to the hoop for the winning lay-up as time expired. Despite the loss, Guilford coach Jack Jensen was pleased with his teams perfor mance. "I'm proud of the way we played against Wesleyan. They are a much bigger and much more physical team than we are, yet we beat them in every phase of the game except the final score." The Quakers next match up is Feb 25 in the ODAC basketball tournament. The Guilfordian General staff meetings now start at 9 p.m. Thursday in (where else?) the Passion Pit.
