Guilford student helps
Montagnards move in

What does it take to move across
the world and into a society that
speaks a different language from
your own, has different customs
than those that you are used to, and
in every way seems foreign and
strange? As the Montagnards have
discovered, the answer is help.
Through the Bonner Scholar pro
gram and Lutheran Family Ser-
vices, Amy Jones, a first-year stu
dent at Guilford College, has of
fered her assistance to these recent
refugees. She helps to prepare the
housing for the refugees which usu
ally involves scrubbing floors, put
ting up curtains and making sure
that the heat and electricity are
working properly. When they ar
rive, Amy helps them get grocer
ies, social security cards, green
cards, and the like. She also helps
teach them English and is currently
tutoring two high-school-age refu-

The Montagnards are from the
highlands of Vietnam,but are very
distinct from the rest of the Viet
namese. They have their own lan
guage and their own culture.
During the Vietnam War, the
Montagnards fought on the side of
the United States and were prom
ised asylum in the U.S. Last year,
after 18 years in hiding, the

As could be expected, the
Montagnards' switch from the
jungle to North Carolina has pro
duced some amusing misunder
standings. For instance, one could
imagine the confusion they experi
enced at seeing Americans loading
trees onto trucks to take into their
homes for Christmas after having
made their homes in trees.
As a volunteer,

Amy has also spent time show
ing them how to use door locks,
refrigerators, and even running
water. She notices a lot of frustra
tion among them. They have a
great will to communicate, and to
ask questions beyond "what's
this?", but they cannot. Despite
this, Amy feels that the refugees
that she has come to know are
among the most enthusiastic and
