January 22, 1993 Men's basketball struggles to 2-2 record since holiday break Doug Bromley Sports Editor Santa was not kind to the Guil ford College men's basketball team over the holidays, bestowing upon the squad poor shooting from the field as well turnovers. These two factors have contributed to a slump that the squad has encountered since returning for the new year. The Quakers, whose record now stands at 8-4 overall, and 5-3 in Old Dominion Athletic conference play, were dealt two of their four losses in games played since the arrival of 1993. In its last two games before the break, the squad split close ones— downing Greensboro College, 73- 71, and coming up on the short end of an 83-81 battle at Emory and Henry. In the Greensboro game, the Pride cut into an 11 point Guil ford lead and eventually tied the contest with 14 seconds to go. Jun ior Paul Ferrell was fouled by Greensboro with four seconds re maining and Ferrell hit both free throws to put the Quakers ahead. Behind junior center Brenda Davis' seemingly ho-hum 30- point, 15- rebound output, Guil ford swamped Lynchburg 68-40 at Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse. The win snapped a four-game winless in-1993 sireak for the Quakers. Guilford led Lynchburg 32-19 at the half and pulled away as Lynchburg hit on just 15 of 52 from the floor. Junior forward Cat Herring made double figures with 11 points. 71 victory. At Emory and Henry, the Quak ers had to feel deja vu, as they found themselves in another tie game with just four seconds re maining. A three-pointer by Andre Ricketts pulled the Quakers to the 81-81 tie, but Emory and Henry scored as time ran out to send Guil ford home with only their second loss of the season. Guilford travelled to Hampden- Sydney College in their first game following a three week holiday break. Despite falling behind by as many as 15 in the first half, the Quakers steadily fought their way back, using tough defense on their way to a 69-64 victory. Adrien Rebounding Avg. Name 15.8 A. Tuesday, Emory & Henry Col lege had dealt the Lady Quakers their fifth loss in six contests, be fore Davis* tenth 20-point, 12- board effort in as many games brought the team out of its slump. Davis now needs but 44 points to reach 1,000 for her career. She leads the ODAC in scoring (28.9), rebounding (14.2) and field goal percentage (62.2). Nationally, Davis was ranked fifth in scoring and 11th in rebounding according to the latest NCAA Division 111 ratings. Two five-point setbacks —72-67 atßandolph-Macon College (Janu- Sports Pritchard led the team with 20 points and Davey McCullough pulled down nine re bounds. Andre Ricketts also added 17 points for the Quakers. Guilford then entertained a tough Vir ginia Wesleyan team who stormed off to a 42- 27 halftime lead. Al- though the Quakers cut the lead to three in the second half, the Marlins prevailed 81-69. The Quakers were outrebounded 43- 25 in the contest Ferrell led in scoring with 16 points while also tossing seven assists. Chad Brown and McCullough each hauled down four rebounds. Guilford returned to the con fines of the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse January 13 for an OD AC matchup against Randolph Macon. The Quakers jumped out to a 10 point lead at one point, bu* the Yellow Jackets' scrappy de fense led to 21 Guilford turnovers and the Quakers found themselves tied at the end of regulation. Ferrell again led the Quakers in scoring, firing in 24 points, and Pritchard and McCullough each had 13 rebounds. The Bridgewater Eagles trav elled to Greensboro to face Guil ford last Saturday. Bridgewater came ready to play, shooting nearly 70 percent on the way to handing the Quakers their worst loss of the season, 84-69. Ricketts was a lone bright spot, hitting five of eight three pointers to lead the team in scoring with 15 points. Pritchard collected five rebounds, but the Eagles outrebounded the Quakers 33-19. At Virginia-Wesleyan, the Mar lins sent the game into an extra period with a bucket in the closing seconds of regulation. Wesleyan proceeded to outscore the Quakers 9-4 in overtime. Davis had her Ebe suilfortrian goal percentage of 51.5 percent. Since returning, however, the squad has failed to shoot better than 50 percent in any of their four games. The Quakers made only 43 percent of their shots from the field in their last two performances. Saturday Guilford will travel to Eastern Mennonite College and face the ODAC's leading scorer, forward Vaughn Troyer. Guilford beat the Royals in their last meet ing, 81-67, as Ricketts scored 21 and Pritchard added 19. Following the trip to Eastern Mennonite, the Quakers hit the road again early next week. Guilford will face Lynchburg College on Tuesday, January 26, and Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday, January 27. third 30-point performance of the season, tallying 36, coupled with 14 rebounds.
