JEfjM&uiUor Irian 4 Letters continued way. With this in mind, let's be a bit more realistic. You are at the party again, but this time the hormones get out of control and you can't help yourself because s/he is so hot. You have sex with this person. Now roll the word EXPONEN TIAL around your mind, and how it applies in this situation. If you did not use a condom, you exposed yourself to all STD and HIV your hot babe has picked up from every partner s/he has slept with, and so on. Even with a condom, there is a chance that you had exposure to these various dis eases. It doesn't seem worth the risk, yet who wants to be non-sexual? We are not made to be non-sexual. Still, even if you "wait" for a "right" partner, there's no guarantee that s/he will be clean though they might think they are. There is a lot that cannot be de- Bush: the world policeman Heather Carretro Staff Writer So George Bush once again was out to prove he's a man. Bush's arch-nemesis Saddam Hussein is being a bad boy and George was going to teach him a lesson. But at what cost? And for what reasons? I'm aware that to some all Iraqis are the Antichrist, but I personally feel a twinge of conscience know ing that at least three civilians were killed in the air raid last Wednes day. Another one was killed in Sunday's air raid, and at least a dozen more civilians were injured. Iraqi television reported the civil ian casualties of Wednesday's air raid to be higher, a statement Marlon Fitzwater called "hog wash." Can we trust Fitzwater, though, when an unconfirmed Air Force report mentions a stray bomb demolishing a civilian apartment complex? Why do I get the feeling our government is hiding some informauon from us? Maybe George wanted to end his presidency with a glorious bang. tec ted thanks to inaccurate blood test ing and to the rapidly mutating HIV virus. Some strains of HIV have gained immunity to the few drugs that are known to slow its growth, and they have the potential to go undetected on the current blood tests. What does one do? Carpe diem, bag as many babes while you can before you die? Or swear your celibacy oath in a convent or monastery? Inciting paranoia is not my point I am scared of this disease and I simply wish to share my thoughts with you. I have no answers to give. However, we are not powerless. Do what you need to do—go get that free anonymous AIDS test at the Greensboro Health Department down town that you have put off; talk; read up on the subject; fortify your body. Go see Jane Cans or Ernest McCoy. Speak your truth. You are the only one who must live with yourself and the presence of AIDS. Lastly, don't play with AIDS. None of us has immunity. Sincerely, Kimberly K. Griffin To the Editor, As a person who has walked in the woods virtually every day I've been at Guilford since I first arrived four years ago, I feel I am well acquainted with our trails. And, from my observations, I am convinced that the trails have p.xpprifvnrpH a himHrprt jvrrpnt mnrc damage in the last semester than they have the three previous years com bined. The reason is MOUNTAIN BIKES. In many places, the trails have become _ I find this attitude vile, simplistic, and others like him will get though, nobody's ass will be demon strating one last time that he is the patron saint of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Poor George... I think he's a little misguided. Ifhe really wanted to be the benign keeper of world justice, maybe he should have done more to recon cile the civil strife in Bosnia, or called other Middle Eastern coun tries on their blatant U.N. and hu man rights violations. But that just wouldn't be as exciting. What the American people want to see is a showdown between good and evil- right, George? A nice black and white war to get the patriotism flowing. The only prob lem is that war is never black and white, and a lot of blood will flow along with the patriotism. But hey, what the hell, let's just get out there and kick some Iraqi quote loosley one local D.J. Perspectives muddy ruts which not only take for ever to dry, but are difficult to walk or run on. The leaves and other de bris which formerly helped to slow erosion have been churned away, leaving the ground exposed and more susceptible to further destruc tion. I am aware that, as a walker, I have no more rights to use of the trails in the woods than a biker or a jogger or two lovebirds, but I do feel that I have the right to protest their misuse. If the trails continue to be treated as they are presently, it won't be long before they are only fit for bikers (if that), thus cheating many people of one of Guilford's assets. These are what I see as two poten tial solutions to the problem: 1. Bikers need to be more respon sible in their use of the woods—if it has been raining for a week, DON'T take your bike out on the trails which are more easily destroyed when weL Limit use, or, even better—don' t ride in the woods at all. 2. Find other places to ride your bike. Form a biking club to take trips together. Contact Cycles de Oro at 854-4497 to join the "Bull Run Off Road Bike Association" and to buy daily or yearly passes to the variety of mountain bike trails found at Bull Run (also known as Adam's Farm) in Greensboro. I hope that we can protect the trails without having to ban mountain bik ers from the woods. However, we ALL share the trails so we each need to treat them in a manner congruent with their value to EACH person that uses them. With Muddy Feet, Ami Worthen kicked —except for the soldiers and civilians who are caught in the crossfire. I'm not saying that Saddam Hussein doesn't pose a threat to worldwide security. He is danger ous, sly, and quite possibly a bit insane. I'm sick, though, of our government's mindless jingoism and selective world-policing poli cies. Bush did not pursue Saddam Hussein because he is a dangerous dictator—there are plenty of those- but because doing so suited his own political purposes. War is a tremendous tragedy, and there are no winners. Presi dent-elect Clinton will hopefully realize this and not maniacally obsess over Saddam Hussein, but, rather, handle his dealings with Iraq honestly and rationally —unlike his predecessor. Guilford has an Honor Code? Bemle Smith Staff Writer "Honor Code. The statement, 'I have been honest and have not observed any dishonesty' symbol izes the honor system and should be pledged in writing on all aca demic work." Yes, this vague and mysterious thing called the Honor Code actually does exist at Guil ford College and is located on page 14 in the Student Handbook—the most frequently read book by stu dents. This may come as a surprise to some but judicial charges, even expulsion can result from not fol lowing the Honor Code. The problem here is not the ac tual code- there is nothing wrong with making cheating, plagiariz ing, unauthorized use of materials, and computer misuse illegal. Mature students should have no problem following a few basic rules laid out before us concerning our Honor Code. However, according to the administration, violating the Honor Code is a serious offense, and it should therefore be made clear and accessible. Rule 3B of the Honor Code talks about "unauthorized collabo ration." This says, "Students can not combine efforts on academic work whether in or out of the class room unless specifically permitted by the instructor." What does this mean? Are we not allowed to talk to fellow students about a home work assignment? Technically this would be a vio lation of the Code which would mean I -and perhaps the majority of the school- would be guilty: a sobering thought. Next, if you were to stroll around this wooded campus and ask a few Over 50% of this years medical school class took Kaplan. Practice with Kaplan now- so you can prac tice as a doctor later. Classes forming now in Greensboro. For more information call? 1-800-759-9987. KAPLAN The answer to the test Question. Sanuarp 22, 1993 random students about their know 1- edge of the Honor Code, chances are you'd get a response such as, "Uh, yeah, that's where you're not supposed to cheat or copy some one else's work." That doesn't tell us a whole lot about this important code which has the power to kick this person out of here. Why not make an at tempt to specify this a little more if it's so important? I think we the students have a right to know ex actly what it is we are dealing with. Finally, how many students have actually sat down and read through the Student Handbook? A hand ful? Possibly two? The Handbook isn't interesting bathroom reading material, so when the average stu dent hears the word "handbook" he or she shivers. Senate is cur rently trying to somehow make this Code more accessible to stu dents and I support this effort be cause it's something which needs to be done. Tell us what the Honor Code means. Tell us when and why we are breaking it, and to what extent we can "collaborate" without actu ally violating it. And with classes, football games, and other outside activities, moststudentswon'tpick up the Student Handbook, and read over the Honor Code on a lazy Sunday afternoon. To encourage understanding, senators should make a proposal that a colorful list of the Code's provisions be pinned up to the bathroom door of every stall of every dormitory. Within no time, all the students will know the en tire Honor Code by heart and the confusion surrounding this vague Guilford regulation will be gone.
