2 )t t&uiltorbian I [ ■ ~ - | Circus to be protested A candlelight vigil honoring animal performers of Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Cir cus will be held Feb. 11 & 12, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the parking lot entrance of the Greensboro Coliseum off High Point Road. It is being sponsored by Hu manity for Animals. The protest is being held be cause the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus is in Greensboro from Feb. 10-14. To protest their use, concerned citizens will join Guilford's Hu manity for Animals in the candlelight vigil. The use of animal perform ers has been controversial in the U.S. since the 1980's. Many parts of America, such as Florida and Hollywood, have banned the use of animal acts in circuses. The aim of the demonstra tion is to have circus-goers con sider the animals' condition by witnessing the demonstration as they search for a spot to park. Histoiydub revived The History club will be re vived at Guilford. This new or ganization will focus on a com bination of local, national and international historical events. The club's activities will include film presentations, lectures and field trips to visit historical sites in the Triad area. The club will meet on Febru ary 17 at s:oopm in the cafeteria (either Walnut Room or balcony) for dinner. The History club will be show ing a film on thursday February 25 at 7:00 pm in Boren Lounge. El Salvador talk to be given Henry Freeman, vice-president for institutional advancement at Earlham College, will present a program, "Opening doors to the world around us," Thursday, Feb. 25,7:00 p.m. in the Gallery. Freeman has lived in El Salva dor, where he has worked with orphanages and refugee popula tions. The rest was occupied with an extended discussion of the proposed tree cutting. Secretary Brian Sugioka gave a report from the Trustee Building and Grounds Committee meeting that took place on January 28. Among the items discussed was the findings of the recent FMEP study of campus facilities and grounds. The Trustees were disturbed at some portions of the report and agreed that budget cutbacks are not an excuse for the problems, particularly with regard to slow response to maintenance requests. Also, most of the lights in the central part of campus are being upgraded to the same very bright lights currently found at the apart ments. Thursday, February 18 ate to work with them to develop a new system involving respect for college property and getting main tenance problems fixed. In committee reports, SRC re ported that they are working with Jason Smith of the Apartment as sociation to find a compromise on the system of fines for leaving trash bags in front of apartments. It wasreported from Student Se rvices that the Underground has started using reusable baskets in stead of paper or styrofoam plates in the Underground. SSC is also looking in to getting the Under ground to stay open by coordinat ing with Union events. Erika re ported that phoning for the Student Loan Fund Auction is being wrapped up. Friday, February 19 noon Brown bag lunch widi Najeeba Syeed on the Muslim observance of Ramadan. 8:00 pm Friday night videos. started when administrators re ceived complaints from visitors to campus about the state of the grounds. This led to the decision to have many trees on campus trimmedor removed for aesthetic reasons, and also for security and the health of the trees. The school brought in Dick Bell of the Bell-Glazener design group to examine the campus and mark those plantings that were designated a problem and should be trimmed or removed. One sixth of the campus was marked, with those trees desig nated for pruning having green paint sprayed on the limb to be removed, and those trees desig nated for removal having orange paint sprayed on them.
