Winnett sees a different world

"When I was in ninth grade my
family was driving along the Blue
Ridge Parkway. My older brother,
just enough older than me to al
ways be 'smarter,' hadhiscamera.
All of a sudden, there was a herd of
deer (or whatever you would call a
group of deer) by the side of the
road. They were all crossing the
Parkway. They wouldn't wait for
the cars to pass...they were jump
ing over the cars! I mean, it was the
most incredible thing I have ever
seen! My brother fiddled with his
light meter to try to snap this in
credible shot, but took too long
and missed it. That experience kind
of made me want to shoot pictures,
to always be ready to shot pic
tures."
Merry Moor Winnet, photogra
phy professor at Guilford College,
has had many interesting experi
ences that, in turn, got her inter
ested in photography as a career.
"At the University of Michigan,
I dated a guy that took photogra
phy. The darkroom was always

suitably dark and stinky, I always
thought. Then a journalism major
and friend of mine took me through
his department's darkroom. He had
some problems with rolling film
on the reel for developing the film.
I rolled it for him in a jiffy. He said
that was the hardest part. I said,

'Photography isn't that tough, I bet
I could do that.'"
And she did. She received a BFA
with honors from the University of
South Florida in 1975, after at
tending Michigan State in East
Lansing under both academic and
visual arts scholarships.

is in keeping with Merry's phi
losophy and outlook on photogra
phy. Merry's goal is for the eye to
discover for itself the wonders of

"Photography, as a medium,
gives more than you ask, but less
than you need to know. It asks
more questions than it answers. I
think Ma;: Kosloff said that. I also
like my pir.ures to evolve by them
selves, in the darkroom. Photogra
phy is technical, but I'm not a
'gizmo-nut'. I still use the first
Minolta I ~>ought in '73 for black
and white infrared photos. I guess
I'm a process nut."
Merry first started at Guilford
College in January of 1983. After
moving to Greensboro, she met
and became friends with the previ
ous photography teacher here,
Becky Lewis.
"Oh, she feel in lc e with some
guy in DC. She tried not to, but
realized finally that she had to be
with him. So I applied here, and
got the job."
"Guilford is my favorite place to
teach. The Sawtooth Center in Win
ston-Salem, where 1 also teach part
time, is nice and I love the people,
but it just doesn't have the same
overall feeling thatGuilford does."
The highly acclaimed Guilford College
Choir, pictured at left, will begin its 21st
annual tour on Friday, March 5, with a perfor
mance in Winston-Salem.
During The Great Southern Tour, the 21-
member student choir will also present musi
cal programs in North Carolina, South Caro
lina, Florida, Alabama and Georgia over an
eight day period. Students will also have a free
day in Clearwater Beach, Florida, during the
tour.
In Winston-Salem, the choir will perform at
Highland Presbyterian Church, located at 200
Magnolia Street, on Friday, March 5. The
program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is open to
the public free of charge.
Under the direction of Edward Lowe, the
Guilford College Choir has been performing
all along the east coast each year since 1972.
Lowe is Dana Professor of Music and Director
of Music Programs at Guilford. Accompanist
on the tour will be Timothy H. Lindeman,
Assistant Professor of Music Also joining the
tour will be Guilford College President Wil
liam R. Rogers and Beverly Rogers, as well as
Alumni Director Kenneth W. Chandler.
