Football legend back on gridiron
Kiley Holder
Sports Editor
Calvin Hunter, holder of 13
Guilford football records and one
of the school's all-time greatest
quarterbacks, has made his return
to Armfield Athletic Center... as
an assistant coach for the Quak
ers.
Hunter graduated from Guil
ford College two years ago and
went to Georgia Southern Univer
sity to pursue a Masters degree in
Sports Management, in the area of
Facilities Management.
In his senior year, (1991) Hunter
led the Quakers as quarterback and
played an enormous part in the
team's rise to championship status.
"I was supposedly the offensive
threat coming back," said Hunter.
"It didn't really matter to me ex
actly how my year went. I just
wanted to win. I felt like we had a
good chance of beating the school
record for wins,...winning the

ODAC championship, and hope
fully making the playoffs."
Hunter and the team achieved
two of those goals: they tied the
win record with eight, and they
won the conference championship.
Head football coach Mike
Ketchum said that he enjoys hav
ing him around. "It's good to have
him back," said Ketchum.
"Calvin's been a great help, espe
cially to our younger kids.
"I think the players...who played
with Calvin respect him a little
more than the other folks they've

played with. Our young kids re

heard about him.
"We'd like to keep him here for
ever, but I don't know if that's go
ing to work out. He'd be a tremen
dous person to have around cam
pus and around the players."
Hunter also expressed that it was
great to be back, but said that his
work with Guilford's football pro
gram will probably be short-term.
"It's pretty nice. I'm just here
this year,...eventually I want to get
into high school athletics-coach
ing, that sort of thing. But it was
good to be back."
Hunter said he works mainly
with the receivers on the team, but
naturally he helps the quarter
backs, as well as running backs.
This summer, Hunter completed
an internship with the Greensboro
Coliseum. He only needs to take a
couple more courses and go
through an "exit interview" to ful
fill the requirements for his Mas
ters degree.
