Recycling: students
want results now
Melissa Hoopes
Guest writer
I remember Guilford College's
fight to protect its historic woods
from the threatening Painter Bou
levard a few years ago. Because
of the administration's efforts, I
believed that Guilford College had
an honest commitment to preserv
ing the natural environment.
Since that time I have become
disheartened by the lack of re
sponse to the numerous requests
for a recycling system for our cam
pus. It is difficult for many mem
bers of the student body to believe
that it has taken so long for the ad
ministration to act. It seems that
although students have worked
hard to convince the Guilford Col
lege community that they believe
that recycling is necessary, all of
their efforts have been in vain.
In the Spring of 1993, members
of Forevergreen, Guilford's envi
ronmental organization, spent ev
ery Sunday afternoon sorting the
glass, aluminum, plasties and
newspapers dropped off by other

students. Months passed and al
though we were pleased that more
people were recycling, we soon
realized that we could not promote
additional recycling because it was
beyond our capacity.
Furthermore, we were con
cerned that the student body was
growing dependent on
Forevergreen's services. We de
cided that we needed to spend
more time educating the students,
staff and administration about the
importance of recycling. We be
lieved that the grass roots educa
tion and encouragement would be
the only way to ensure that recy
cling would continue here in the
future.
When we approached the mem
bers of the administration, we were
told that it was preferred that For
evergreen stop recycling for the
rest of the campus. The adminis
tration was concerned that one of
us might get hurt and the college
would be liable. Furthermore, we
were told that Bill Scott, Head of
Grounds and Maintenance, was
heavily involved in recycling ef-

forts on North Carolina and that he
was working on establishing a sys
tem at Guilford.
Independently, Forevergreen
began researching different recy
cling possibilities and presented
them to Bill Scott and other admin
istrators. When we told Gary
Kenton, a well-known environ
mentalist in the Greensboro area,
about our difficulties, he wrote a
letter to President Bill Rogers ask
ing him to support our efforts.
Since that time, we have contin
ued on our crusade. We have con
tinued educating and encouraging
the student body to recycle on their
own until we get our own system.
We also have organized Sunday
afternoon carpooling for students
wanting to take their recyclable to
local centers.
Although last year there was an
attempt by the administration to
have aluminum recycling for the
campus, it was a failed effort, be
cause the admin istration placed the
responsibility of removing the
cans on the shoulders of a student
