Registration process improves Ann Witt Staff writer 1,057 main campus students preregistered last week from Mon day-Thursday, Nov. 8-11. 301 CCE (Center for Continuing Edu cation) students preregistered. These numbers do not reflect any major departure from the number of students preregistering last fall. In November of 1992,1,046 main campus students preregistered. 310 CCE students preregistered. This year's preregistration was easier on sophomores, who usually end up preregistering last: "This year for the first time in 12-15 years sophomores registered be fore freshman" Coordinator of Academic Advising Jerry Godard said. According to Godard, this meant that first-year students and sophomores were not competing with each other for the same classes. "It is fairer to sophomores be cause they have fewer courses to select from" Registrar Cathy West said. One is to create more space for the advising on site and for students to be more aware that we are going to come close to creating a schedule that meets requirements... if we can't provide schedules for people that meet the curriculum agenda the curriculum has to change." Guilford's curriculum is currently undergoing revision. Plans for the far-off future to improve the preregistration pro cess include increased dependence on computers. According to Godard, the school hopes to be enjoying desktop computer advis ing in four or five years. West con curred: "Our hope is to move in that direction as soon as we have the hardware for faculty," West said. "That is very high on my wish-list for preregistration." Ac cording to West the computer ad vising system would utilize termi nals or networked PCs and would hopefully be integrated with the current telecommunications net working system. 0J 1 CO 3 a >* XI o o JZ a. Ijtobemfaer 19.1993 SENATE ESSENTIALS CoMI'II I'D DY SIiNATOR WADE TOMLINSON Wade Tomlinson was nominated for Secretary. He will be up for approval next Senate meeting. Clerks Committee: •Senate discussed smoking policy, again. There was no decision or any consensus resolved on the matter concerning the elimination of smoking in the cafeteria or the Underground. Suggested is having survey of student opinion. Budget Committee: •Senate approved the budgets for men's and women's rugby, Pub board, Psychology club and Spanish club. •Budgets up for approval next week are NCSL and sports management. •Brian Burton announced that Senate tentatively has $14,039.59 left to delegate to various groups and special requests. Student Loan Fund: •Student Loan Fund is having a forum on Sunday at 6 p.m. in Boren Lounge. Student Residence Coun cil: •SRC is working on changes to the selection process for off-campus petition ap proval. One idea being considered is to consider hours completed and age, and break ties through a lottery system. Student Services: •Having better ventilation in the cafeteria is too expen sive. •More ash trays will be provided in the Underground •Book Store said they are not overcharging for books and materials. Input on the subject is welcome. Environmental Concerns: •Forum Nov. 17,1993 in the cafeteria at 8:30 p.m. Special Projects: •Needs input on revising or taking another look at Senate's constitution.
