Cfte (guiltortoan 16 Athlete of the Week Jason A. Caplain Staff Writer Clifton Howard, a freshman from Sumter S.C. has been se lected as the Athlete of the Week. Howard has played aggressively for the men's basketball team this past week, giving fans, teammates, coaches and opposing players something to watch and admire. In an interview before an after noon practice on Tuesday, Howard expressed satisfaction with the basketball team saying, "I like playing for Guilford and working with my teammates and coaches. This group is a place to share sadness, helpful thoughts, and common experience in hopes of ongoing and deeper understanding. Jane Caris, Max Carter, Dick Dyer The group meets on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 until 3:00 in The Hut. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or needs. Howard When talk of the team record was mentioned, Howard brushed it off. "Our record is misleading because we played some pretty good games." He expects that feportfi since tournament time is near, the team will "turn [the level of play] up a notch." "The last four games are crucial, as far as our standing in the ODAC," he points out. "We need to get these [next four games] to be successful." Howard gets a lot of support from his teammates for his accom plishments. Teammate Tim Wooten says that "Clifton is the quickest player I've ever seen in my life." With compliments like that, it is good to hear that Clifton Howard says "playing basketball for Guilford will be a four-year commitment," so we have only seen the beginning of a bright fu ture. Smith also received the MVP honors for the regular season, in which he won his third straight rushing title. As Emmitt himself would tell you, he did not win the game singl&-handedly. Troy Aikman dished out 19-of-27 passing for 207 yards. Alvin Harper and Michael Irvin were the primary ben eficiaries of Aikman's generosity, receiving for 75 and 66 yards, respectively. Duke rises to the top For the fifth straight week, a different team occupied the No. 1 spot on Monday's AP Poll. After UCLA's lost to Cal, Duke became the sixth school this season to own the rights to be called "the best in the nation." Monarchs tied for second After a win against Richmond Sunday, the Greensboro Mon archs are tied for second place in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Their record stands at 26-12-5, and with 57 points, the Monarchs are tied withfthe Raleigh IceCaps, a single point be hind Hampton Roads. Greensboro host the Charlotte Checkers tonight at the Greens boro Coliseum. Game time is 7pm.
