Jfefaruarp 18, 1994 Ricketts leads three-point barrage Jon Simon Staff Writer G.C. 96 M.C. 66 urday because of the snow. Maybe the snow was giving them a hint not to visit Guilford because they were in for a 96-66 slaughter in the make-up game Tuesday night. Methodist (12-10) caught Guil ford (9-12) at a bad time because the Quakers were shooting the ball like they were professional marks men. Guilford shot 50% for the game and 61% from three point range making 14 of 23 from out side the arc. Guilford took the jump-ball and made a 14-2 run led by senior guard Andre Ricketts. Ricketts scored on four possessions in a row in the first six minutes including two three pointers. At the 12:41 mark Guilford was up 26-12 and forced Methodist to take a timeout. Methodist could never close the early margin. In the next seven minutes, Guilford's second unit drained four three-pointers, three by Tim Wooten and one by Kevin Spainhour, both freshmen. The only offense Methodist had was down inside where their freshman center Tyrone Bennett muscled in ill Guilpond tbis Week Men's Basketball Feb. 19 Saturday BRIDGEWATER* 2:00 pm Women's Basketball Feb. 19 Saturday R-M WOMAN'S* 4:00 pm Regular season finale for both teams!!! Ricketts continued his three point onslaught in the second half drilling three more three-pointers. Guilford expanded their lead to 22 which forced another Methodist &port£ timeout 5:30 into the half and they were never able to come back. Before the game Ricketts had no idea that he was going to be flam ing hot. "My warm up was hor rible. I took a couple of shots and went back to the locker room. My job is to score. Freshman forward Clifton Howard began to heat up, scoring all of his 13 points in the remain der of the half. With four minutes left, freshman crowd favorites An drew Marotta and Vladimir Rekovic came into the game with loud cheers from the crowd. Both players were the main focus of the end of the game. Marotta made a 12 foot jump shot with two min utes left and drew another big ap plaud from the yelling crowd. With four seconds left and the crowd chanting "Vladi, Vladi,..." Wooten inbounded the ball to Rekovic and he quickly dribbled up to the Guilford three point line to get off the final shot. It hung in the air then clanked off the rim. Rekovic grinned, so did Marotta and so did the rest of the team as they walked off with their sweet est home victory of the year. "We were unbelievable offen sively. It was like the whole team was in a zone," said Guilford As sistant Coach John Thompson. "It's not often that everyone shoots that well together." Andre Ricketts led both teams in scoring with 25 points having made six of eight three-pointers. "Ricketts has been a tremendous three-point shooter his whole ca reer, but this was a tremendous ef fort on his part. He helped the team Photo by Daphne Lewis Cf )t (guilforbian relax", said Thompson. Four other Guilford players were in double figures as well, Ferrell tallied 15 points, Howard 13, Wooten 12, and junior Jason Ferguson had 11 points. Davey McCullough led Guilford in re bounding with seven. Dennison led Methodist with 15 points and Eric Rhen added 11. Guilford's last home game is tomorrow against Bridgewater which is an important one for the Quakers. It is the last game for all of the seniors including Paul Ferrell who has been All-Confer ence the last three years. Bridgewater beat Guilford by two points last time they met in a game Guilford should have won, and the Quakers want revenge. This also determines where Guilford will be seeded in the ODAC tournament. Right now the Quakers are in the middle of the pack. A win could put them in fourth place. "I 've never been involved in a college situation like this before, but I know this game is going to be a war," said Marotta. "We should have beat them at their place and we are going to beat them here." *** Late game*** Guilford lost 81-70 at Roanoke Wednesday. G.C. 70 R.C. 81 13
