Mignon Ezzell Staff Writer Did you know that there is a ce lebrity right here at Guilford Col lege? Alex Stoesen, a professor in the history department at Guilford, has written a book about Guilford County. The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources asked Stoesen to chronicle Guilford County in a book entitled "Guil ford County Brief History." The department is doing a brief reca pitulation on each county in North Carolina. Only thirteen counties have been done. "I have been interested in local history for about twenty-five years. I had to do a lot of research." Stoesen traveled mostly around the county to get information and to 1994 STudeirr Loan Fund Aucnon I] ST. "I didn't get to do that much exotic travel ing when I went to Italy." He also interviewed public officials and other citizen&of the county to get feedback. The book centers on the educa tional and transportation develop ments throughout the centuries. It "I didn't get to do that much exotic traveling when I went to Italy." - Alex Stoesen tells how the county has pro gressed. Guilford County is one of the most industrialized counties in North Carolina. Stoesen com mented, "It doesn't just happen. It took a lot of effort from the people who lived here." Writing the book was not easy. "The process was a lot of writing and rewriting. This last year was JFeature* put to boiling all the information down to fit under 100 pages. Ra leigh (where the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources is located) returned it at least three times for revision." The book had to be under 100 pages so he had to offer "interpretive angles on the county." This was not the first time Stoesen had worked on a history of Guilford County. In 1981 he worked on another book with someone else for the American Revolution Bicentennial Commis sion. That version was much longer than the one now. Stoesen thinks that the book serves the purpose of being useful to people who arrive new to the area~and to the area itself. He does not receive any profit for the sell ing of the books because it belongs to the state. Stoesen is very grate ful to the college for allowing him time off to write the book.
