This past week marked the end
of the regular season games for the
Guilford's women's basketball
team. The Lady Quakers played
two home games last week post
ing a win against Emory and Henry
on Thursday and losing to
Randolph-Macon on Saturday.
The team finished the 1993-94 sea
son with a record of 13-5 in the
Old Dominion Athletic Confer
ence and 14-10 overall.

A few
weeks before
Thursday's
game, the
Guilford women out played Emory
& Henry on the road and won by a
30-point margin. This game was
no different. The team was able
to capture a 25-point ODAC win.
As stated by head coach Barbara
Bausch, everyone on the team con
tributed to the 78-53 victory. Ev
ery team member had playing time
and was able to score. In addition,
"everyone had some key defensive
stops," Bausch said. It was this
strong team performance that pre
vented Emory and Henry from
getting into the game. Bausch also
stated that this game was the best
example of "team play" of the sea
son.
At the end of the game, the top
scorer was senior co-captain
Brenda Davis with 20 points.
Other players who scored in
double digits were first-year stu
dents Kristin Schott and Damara
Luce senior co-captain Catherine
Herring with 11 points each. Davis
led the Lady Quakers in rebounds
as well, with nine boards.

lege, a con-
test which
could be noted as perhaps the most
important game of the season.
Going into this game, the team was
tied with Randolph-Macon for sec
ond place in the ODAC. However,
with the 63-60 loss, Guilford
dropped to third place for the sea
son.
According to Bausch, the team
"tightened up some" for the game.
Sports
Being the last home game of the
season and the last home game for
the three seniors of the team—
Davis, Herring, and Melissa
Shaw —the Lady Quakers put
pressure on themselves to perform
well. Instead of the pressure work
ing in a positive manner, the team
allowed Randolph-Macon's de
fense to prevent them from scor
ing easily. In addition, Guilford
permitted ample opportunities for
their opponents to score from the
foul line, which Randolph-Macon
took advantage of.
Again, Guilford exhibited some
very balanced scoring in the game.
Herring led the team with 15
points. First-year student Stacey
Simms and Sophomore Derrill
Smith each contributed 13 points
to the effort while Davis,
Guilford's scoring and rebounding
threat, was held to 11 points and
13 rebounds.

students last
Saturday. Bright, sunny, 70 de
grees, but it was even brighter day
for the men's basketball team who
finished up the regular season with
a 78-75 overtime win against
Bridge water (15-9) who is seeded
fourth in the ODAC tournament
this weekend. This was the seniors'
last game and they would lead the
team to victory.
After playing good defense and
shooting 56% from three-point
range, the Quakers were up eight
at halftime in front of 1500 spec
tators. Andre Ricketts lit it up in
the first half and then lost some of
his fire in the second, but wound
up finishing with 16 points.
In the second half Bridgewater's
All-American candidate Senior
Jeff Berry shut Ricketts down with
ease, being four inches taller. The
Eagles broke into the Quakers'
eight-point lead and kept it close
throughout the half. The Quaker
seniors kept the team alive all the
way to the end. In fact the second
unit all together averaged only 10
minutes of play.
With eight seconds left to play
in regulation, senior Mike Roach
was at the line and missed two free
throws. This made the scone 65-
64, Guilford in the lead. Then with
four seconds left, Mike Dayton of
Bridgewater drew a foul and went
to the charity stripe, where he hit
one of two free throws to make the
score tied at 65 at the end of regu
lation.
In the extra period Bridge water
and Guilford traded baskets at the
the NCAA Tournament. The first
team they Will face is Emory and
Henry.
The team's strategy will be to
come out strong and attack their
opponents in their first game in
order to avoid elimination and ad
vance in the tournament. Bausch
feels that the team is well prepared
for the ODAC tourney and she
stated that though "we didn't fin
ish off our last game with a vic
tory, we are still on an uphill
[trend]" going into the tournament.
beginning, but then it came down
to who wanted the game the most.
With eight seconds left senior
guard Paul Ferrell hit two free
throws to put the Quakers up by
three. This was followed by two
three-point attempts from
Bridgewater, but neither one fell
through the net and Guilford came
away with the win.
It was a
beautiful day
for Guilford
Guilford Coach Jack Jensen said
of the regular season-ending vic
tory, "Any win during the season
is nice to have. Our freshman (sec
ond unit) couldn't get their offense
going. The seniors were going to
win or lose this game for us. The
win gave us confidence going into
the tournament."
The Guilford seniors did pull
this victory out and gave a quality
final performance in front of the
Guilford crowd. Ricketts' 16
points led the team, Ferrell scored
15 points, and Roach added 11.
Guilford's other senior, Chad
Brown, didn't play because of a
severely injured knee. Freshman
Clifton Howard was the only
freshman to score in double dig
its, with 14 points.
Bridge water was led by Beny
with 26 points and Dan Rush who
tallied 21.
All-Conference guard Ferrell
was especially pleased knowing all
of the senior parents were there
and knowing this would be the end
of a very successful career for the
Quakers. "It was exactly what I
wanted. We had a bunch of close
ones like this and we usually didn't
come out on top. This time every
body wanted to win and we did,"
said Ferrell.
The Quakers are seeded seventh
in the tournament and will begin
play against Hamden-Sydney in
the Old Dominion Athletic Con
ference tournament in Virginia.
