Student Loan Fund auction in gear
Christian Scanniello
Staff Writer
As part of a ten-year effort to
raise money for Guilford College
students in need of financial assis
tance, Community Senate will
sponsor the eleventh annual Stu
dent Loan Fund Auction on the
evening of March 17 at the newly
completed Annex of the Greens
boro Coliseum.
The annual event is a student
initiated effort to provide a fund
from which Guilford students in
need can receive a low-interest
loan. The fund has grown to
$250,000 and currently provides
128 students with such loans.
Die reception and silent auction
will begin at 6:3opm and the live
auction will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Auctioneer Wayne Mendenhall
will be coordinating the bids. Fol
lowing the auction, there will be a
St. Patrick's Day dance, featuring
DJ Randy Smith. Tickets for the
evening's festivities are $5 per per-
son.
Additionally, students will be
performing live Irish music during
the intermissions. Many of
Guilford's international students
will also be present at the event,
holding an International coffee
house where auction participants
can take a break from the action
and sample a variety of coffees
from around the world.
The Guilford College Student
Loan Fund Auction was recog
nized in 1983 by former president
Reagan as being one of the first
student efforts in the country to
help provide affordable education
for students in need of financial
assistance.
"It is important to recognize that
this is a student-initiated benefit,"
said senior Melissa Hoopes, chair
of the Student Loan Fund Auction
Committee. "All students realize
how expensive higher education is
as well as how valuable a educa
tion is at Guilford College. I per
sonally receive one of the Commu
nity Senate loans and I know that
Jleto*-
I would not have been able to af
ford Guilford without this assis
tance"
Students have been scouting the
area since December, spreading
the word and picking up donations
for the auction. Among the items
collected to be auctioned are a 5-
day Florida vacation in August,
mountain bikes, art work from lo
cal artists, skis, furniture, baby sit
ting services, as well as other as
sorted services donated by area
businesses and members of the
Guilford College community.

nations and tickets, call (910) 316-

formation desk located in
Founders Hall.
"[The Student Loan Fund Auc
tion] is one of the best things Sen
ate does because it's for every
body," said junior Richard Ewell,
an S.L.F.A. committee member.
"It's money that's available for stu
dents, generated tiirough students'
own efforts."
