4 )t (guillorbiatt Student Loan Fund auction in gear Christian Scanniello Staff Writer As part of a ten-year effort to raise money for Guilford College students in need of financial assis tance, Community Senate will sponsor the eleventh annual Stu dent Loan Fund Auction on the evening of March 17 at the newly completed Annex of the Greens boro Coliseum. The annual event is a student initiated effort to provide a fund from which Guilford students in need can receive a low-interest loan. The fund has grown to $250,000 and currently provides 128 students with such loans. Die reception and silent auction will begin at 6:3opm and the live auction will begin at 7:30 p.m. Auctioneer Wayne Mendenhall will be coordinating the bids. Fol lowing the auction, there will be a St. Patrick's Day dance, featuring DJ Randy Smith. Tickets for the evening's festivities are $5 per per- son. Additionally, students will be performing live Irish music during the intermissions. Many of Guilford's international students will also be present at the event, holding an International coffee house where auction participants can take a break from the action and sample a variety of coffees from around the world. The Guilford College Student Loan Fund Auction was recog nized in 1983 by former president Reagan as being one of the first student efforts in the country to help provide affordable education for students in need of financial assistance. "It is important to recognize that this is a student-initiated benefit," said senior Melissa Hoopes, chair of the Student Loan Fund Auction Committee. "All students realize how expensive higher education is as well as how valuable a educa tion is at Guilford College. I per sonally receive one of the Commu nity Senate loans and I know that Jleto*- I would not have been able to af ford Guilford without this assis tance" Students have been scouting the area since December, spreading the word and picking up donations for the auction. Among the items collected to be auctioned are a 5- day Florida vacation in August, mountain bikes, art work from lo cal artists, skis, furniture, baby sit ting services, as well as other as sorted services donated by area businesses and members of the Guilford College community.
