NEWS CLIPS Student arrested for handgun possession, awaits adjudication After Saturday's football game, the Greensboro Police Department arrested a first-year Guilford student on a charge of possessing a handgun on an educational site. This is a felony offense. The stu dent drew a registered, holstered handgun on the Salisbury State football team. According to Mike Kimel, the Director of Safety and Security, the gun was not drawn in a threatening manner. The stu dent faces adjudication by both District Court and Guilford College Judicial Board this week. 'Peeping Tom 1 sighted in Milner The second incident in Milner of a "Peeping Tom" was reported the evening of Nov. 12. A young man came into the 2nd floor bath room, apparently looking for someone, while several women were taking showers. The students confronted him, and he left. A wit ness reported seeing him open the 2nd floor door with a key. As of yet, Security has no suspects. New keys for the exterior Milner doors have been ordered, and will be issued to residents before offi cials change the locks. Kimel encourages students to be alert, sensi tive and inquisitive, and to always report suspicious activity. Windows smashed, portable equipment stolen from cars Approximately 10 cars have been broken into in the last two months. After smashing in windows, the perpetrator(s) stole stereo equipment, C.D.'s and speakers. The break-ins occured in the YMC A gym, English and Milner parking lots. Security has no suspects, but is patrolling the parking lots more frequently. Automobile owners are encouraged to put portable car components in their trunks or otherwise remove them from the car, keep records of serial numbers and consider installing car alarms. Team reports SBSO theft After Saturday's game, 28 Salisbury State players and coaches reported a total of SBSO worth of money and clothes stolen from their locker room. Security has no suspects. Given that the locker room was locked at all times it wasn't occupied by the team, Direc tor of Security and Safety Mike Kimel believes the guilty party(s) were already in the room or had a key. According to Greensboro Police Department statistics, the Honda Accord comprises 75 percent of the vehicles stolen in the city. Noise complaints: 6 Parking violations: 85 Fire alarms: 7 Trespassing: 3 First aid assistance: 1 SAFETY TIPS SENATE ESSENTIALS BY SI COORDINATOR I I ISA CONS'TAN"/A TBE SENATE MEETING OF WEDNESDAY, NOV. 9 started by notifing senators about the new policy concerning illegal sub stances on campus. President Rich Ewell informed senators about Senate's letter sent to Mona Olds requesting the sus pension of the new policy. Still under executive reports, Ewell expressed discontent about the absences of senators. He re minded senators they are permit ted only three excused absences for Senate meetings, and an nounced a new policy whereby two committee absences will equal one Senate absence. SRC informed the Senate that residence halls will remain open two extra hours Thanksgiving break. In Community Concerns, the committee talked about chalking on campus. They said that a majority of constituents be lieved that Senate should not re strict students' free speech. Senate approved Stephanie Jennings as the new secretary. They also approved the special request by AACS Club of S4BO to fund the visit by Cheryl Brown Henderson. Senator Adrienne Massanari expressed the neces sity of creating a policy for spe cial requests. THE WEDNESDAY, N0V.16 SENATE MEETING started with President Ewell addressing the Milner senators. Ewell reminded them about the importance of at tending Hall Council meetings. He then announced the opening of the Junior Senator position previously filled by Stephanie Jennings, who recendy assumed the Senate secretary position. The approval of minutes was de layed until the next Senate meet ing because extra copies of last week's minutes were not avail able for senators who didn't get their minutes in their boxes. Various senators expressed com plaints about the issue. In committee reports, the Stu dent Loan Fund Auction Com mittee informed senators about the process of requesting items for the annual auction. The deadline for receiving items will be February 17. Budget com mittee recommended the ap proval of the request of $2,775 by WQFS Senators approved the the CCE housing request as pre sented by SRC. The Rugby re quest of S2OO for new goal pads was also approved. Mona Olds, Dean of Student Life, talked to senators about the recent drug policy revision. Senators expressed their doubts and comments about the issue. Treasurer Brian Burton ex pressed his discomfort about the lack of information about the new policy. Other senators were also discontented with the issue and especially with the seizure procedure.
