Dana vandalism raises
issue of building security

Seven fire extinguishers were
found, their chemical contents
sprayed like snow from the bal
cony in Dana Auditorium. Dam
ages were 16,000 dollars. A per
formance was postponed. There
are no suspects.
The morning of Saturday, Feb.
25, on a routine security check, a
Security officer discovered that a
side door to Dana Auditorium was
broken and unlocked. He entered
the building to find that the con-

tents of seven fire extinguishers
were sprayed evenly across the
auditorium's seats, curtains and
chandeliers.
The Greensboro Police Depart
ment was notified, as was the Fire
Department. Provost Dan Poteet,
Director of Security and Safety
Mike Kimel, Director of Mainte
nance Steve Skinner, Environmen
tal Safety expert Syrulwa Somali
and Director of Housekeeping
Cecil McDowell gathered on the
scene.
They immediately decided to
close Dana Auditorium, and hired

Right now, the Academic Dean
Search Committee is in the pro
cess of gathering feedback from
students, faculty, administration,
and staff on the three most recent
candidates for the Academic
Dean position.
The candidates are Martha
Cooley, Wynn Goering and
Ormond Smythe.
Each candidate comes from a
different background. Martha
Cooley is the chair of the Guil-

mance was postponed. An alcohol
education program sponsored by
Ernest McCoy was canceled.
Monday classes in Dana were
moved.
"[These measures] were more of
a precaution because the substance
was non-toxic; it was not a real
threat," Kimel says. By Monday
afternoon, Dana was cleaned up
and declared safe.

Criteria for
President set;
search begins

The search for Guilford's sev
enth president is underway. The
Presidential Criteria Committee
has just completed its list of "es
sential characteristics we all want
in the next leader of the college,"
as a memo from Chairman of the
Board of Trustees Charles Milner,
Jr. says.
The criteria as set forth by this
committee are now being utilized
by the Search Committee. Chaired
by Trustee Wilbert Edgerton, the
Search Committee is identifying
potential candidates and screening
these candidates for the final Presi
dential Selection Committee.
The student representatives on
the Search Committee arc Susan
Allen and Kelly Davis.
The Criteria Committee is made
up of two students-Chris Bchm
and Nick Remmes-faculty, staff
and trustees. Behm says that they
have discussed the responsibilities
of the next President and the chal
lenges he or she will face.

top ODAC honors

Freshman center Laura Haynes
and sophomore forward Bari Nixon
have been named All-Old Domin
ion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
basketball players in voting by
league coaches.
Haynes was picked for first team
honors, while Nixon was named to
the second team.
Haynes was honored as ODAC
Player of the Year and ODAC Fresh
man of the Year. She led the league
in scoring at 21.7 points per game,
and was second in rebounding at
10.4 per game. She was also among
conference leaders in field goal per
centage (53.3 percent) and steals (80
on the year). Haynes broke school
March 22,1995
brainstorming sessions. The "espe
cially relevant" criteria, as set forth
in the advertisement the commit
tee devised, reads as follows:
• A member of the Society of
Friends or one who is so familiar
with and supportive of Quaker val
ues as to feel at home and be ef
fective in leading a Quaker college
with a tradition of consensual gov
ernance.
• An academic leader with the
experience and preparation to con
tinue the enhancement of
Guilford's academic programs and
their emphasis on international,
intercullural, and interdisciplinary
learning; and the ability lo serve
as an influential spokesperson and
advocate for private liberal ails
colleges locally, regionally and
nationally.
• A person with the instinct and
talent lor fund raising who will en
thusiastically accept a leading role
in raising annual and capital funds
from individuals, corporations and
foundations.
• An administrator with demon
strated success in institutional

She was also named 1995 ODAC
Tournament Most Valuable Player
after setting a tournament scoring
record of 41 points in a game against
Emory and Henry.
Nixon was second in the ODAC
in scoring at 17.4 points per game,
and eighth in rebounding at 8.7.
Nixon also won ODAC Player of
the Week honors Feb. 20 while lead
ing Guilford to two wins.
Women's basketball head coach
Barb Bausch was picked as ODAC
Coach of the Year by virtue of leading
her team to a school record 20-6 finish
and a third place conference standing.
Haynes says,' 'Our team has accom
plished a lot this year, especially for a
young team."
