M.L. Carr
Guilford grad M.L.
Carr now Celtics coach
TIM FORBES
staff writer
In May of this year, Guilford graduate and
co-captain of the 1973 NAIA National
Championship team, M.L. Carr was named
head coach of the NB A's Boston Celtics.
Carr, who is Vice President of Basketball
Operations for the Celtics, with the approval
of the Celtic's owner named himself coach
earlier this summer. Although he has a
strong history with the Celtics, Carr is re
ceiving strong criticism from the Boston
media.
Carr's former Guilford coach, Jack
Jenson, had this to say: "People have
doubted him for as long as I have known
him. He has far surpassed what people have
Ever thought about

expected him to do."
Criticism and rejection are nothing new
to Mr. Carr. Early in his professional ca
reer he was cut by the ABA's Kentucky
Colonels. He was forced to sell cars while
playing in the Eastern League in Penn
sylvania.
Things changed for the better as he was
named to the All-Defensive team in 1979.
Later that year he signed with the Boston
Celtics, where he helped win two NBA
titles.
Carr has his work cut out for him in
Boston. After losing playmaker Domin
ique Wilkins to an overseas team, Carr is
going to have to find a consistent scorer
on a team that had a losing record last year.
