Senate met November 1 and 8
this month. At the November 1
meeting, Senators were asked to
consult with their constituents on
how they feel about tiling the com
mon rooms in the Bryan suites. A
lot of money is spent every year to
re-carpet rooms. Also, the Apart
ments often require repainting. A
solution to this might be wallpa
pering.
Reading day, a day set aside for
students to prepare for final exams,
is currently on a Saturday. Senate
discussed changing the reading
day to a Friday so that students will
have additional preparation time.
At the November 8 meeting of
Community Senate, Stephanie
Jennings reported that Guilford
had been accredited by the SACS
but that it was suggested that the
intramural program be improved
and that more opportunities for
women in varsity sports be made
available.
A 1 Newell visited Senate last
week. Students expressed the con
cern that the honor's budget would
be cut dramatically and asked how
this would effect academic stan
dards at Guilford as well as stu
dent retention. A 1 responded that

although the actual budget would
be cut a bit (the amount of money
spent on financial aid increases
annually and cuts must be made) a
greater percentage of honor's stu
dents would be funded by need
based awards. He remarked that
the board is not striving to attract
a lower quality of students; they
are acknowledging budgetary con
straints.

Why he is involved in Senate:
I would like to see numerous
campus reforms made, and being
in Senate will give me the chance
to express my opinion.
Largest Guilford concerns:
The cafeteria, Underground, fa
cilities, maintaining a nice campus.
Global concerns:
The spread of democracy, end
ing racism, protection of the envi
ronment
Guilford is considering making
the Dana houses, the Apartments,
and Milner's second and third floor
co-educational. Mona Olds re
ported to Senate last week that
other schools which have similar
policies have experienced reduced
damage, a greater sense of com
munity, less noise, greater concern
for safety, and improved relations
between males and females on
campus.

Personal goals:
