The dangers of drugs
Using drugs today, even occa
sionally, can have a profound ef
fect on your tomorrow.
• Employers ask about past drug
use, and may even test.
• It's illegal, at Guilford College,
getting caught could mean a po
lice record.
• You may not pass a polygraph,
and many jobs require one
• IV drugs carry the risk of life
threatening diseases like hepatitis
and AIDS.
• You won't be nominated a Su
preme Court Judge!
So you don't do drugs. What
about alcohol? Here are six really
good reasons not to drink:
Dieting? Alcohol is jam-packed
with calories: 100-500 per glass of
beer, wine or liquor.
Worried about wrinkles? Alco
hol is a diuretic and can rob your
skin of needed fluids.
Thought you outgrew zits? Al
cohol can increase your skin's pro
duction of oil and fat.
Has you hair lost its luster? Al
cohol impedes the protein produc
tion and can change the way your

hair looks and feels.
Bloodshot, baggy eyes? Too
much to drink and too little sleep
can make them glassy, red, and
sunken. Alcohol is a diuretic, so
eyes can feel dry and irritated as
you get dehydrated.
Too much alcohol can cause
impotence or sterility.
So, how much is too much, you
ask? The only completely safe al
cohol consumption level before
driving is zero. If you, or anyone
else is concerned about your so
briety, don't drive. Get a ride, or
stay where you are.
Plan ahead. Designate a driver
who agrees to drink only nonalco
holic drinks.
New statute tightens
underage drinking and
driving law
OK, here's the deal...
As of September 15, 1995,
NCGS 20-138.3 tightens the laws
concerning drivers less than 21
years of age. It is now unlawful for
a person under 21 to drive a motor

vehicle on a highway or public
vehicle area while having alcohol
or a controlled substance in his or
her system. (Other than a con
trolled substance lawfully obtained
and taken in appropriate amounts.)
New statute GS 20-138.7 im
poses stricter rules on driving with
an open container of alcohol in the
vehicle. The new statute prohibits
a person from driving a motor ve
hicle while there is an open con
tainer of alcohol in the passenger
area of the vehicle and the driver
is consuming alcohol or has alco
hol remaining in his or her body.
The statute also prohibits open
containers of spirituous liquor for
tified wine, and mixed beverages
in the passenger area whether or
not the driver has been drinking.
PLEASE DO NOT DRINK
AND DRIVE.
DON'T DRINK AND WALK.
KEEP IT SIMPLE.
DON'T DRINK.
